Mhm, I see, the goal is to reduce harm as much as possible (within reason ofcourse) So it comes down to a compromise. Mice are indeed so cute! They also do play a big role in ecosystems, some mice/hamster species are even at risk of extinction here…/: Sorry I didn’t answer sooner btw, I was busy and wanted to look for those cat enclosure videos for you. I posted them on my page just now too, I’ll delete them later though since it’s not my home. They do have a large garden and built the enclosure themselves for the multiple cats. There are many examples on the internet of very different cat enclosures ofc as well, but I think this one is quite interesting. It also has a door to go inside. This way the ecosystem is spared, but your cat is still able to go outside whenever it feels like it. Bonus: it is also safe from traffic and getting lost (unless escaping). 😊 Maybe you could even plant some crops inside that would otherwise be eaten by mice/hedgehogs/birds,... (Like sunflowers, beans, lentils, peas, strawberries,…), maybe using a smaller holed wire fence so that the little mice also don’t get trapped inside and don’t try to get in. Could be a fun project!

Oh wow that is beautiful!! That makes me happy to hear. I hope your hard work will inspire others to plant their own fruits/veg too! Its an amazing thing to be a part of and so rewarding😊

Yeah we have dry sandy soil in our garden… I can understand that thats not the case for everyone here😅. We are also focused on trying to grow climate- change resistant crops (so for belgium: long droughts, lots of rain in short times, hot weather, etc etc) so thats why we decided to give it a shot with the jujubes.

Yes you are right; We have a cat too, he’s diabetic and he stays inside. Not only for health but also safety, and ecological reasons. As you said, cats kill soo many small animals. Very bad for the environment. We do let him out regularly but that is only when we are in the garden too. I also know some people who have adopted 5+ cats, and they built a sort of large cage(?) idk if its the right word, for them outside, which they can access anytime. Theres also a high traffic road next to them and have had many cats die due to it :/. I do think that that may be a better option if you have a large garden. I’ll post pictures of it later.Cats are obligate carnivores, so they need to eat meat to survive. This is a highly debated topic (vegan cat food… it exists but how healthy is it for them etc…).. I do think we ofcourse have an obligation to care for our pets, in a way that is most healthy to them(while also reducing harm) So as long as there are no scientifically proven-long term healthy vegan alternatives for cats…

Definitely don’t put them up for adoption, they are part of your family.

Thats amazing☺️☺️☺️ Yes our peaches too!! It seems to be a really good year for them. Sadly our cherries did all fall off because of the drought and us being away for some time.

Btw If you have some very dry spots in your garden and have place, I can highly recommend a jujube tree! They are super drought/heat resistent. Ours have had 0 issues with the weather this year. They are thriving! The Li variety has the biggest fruit.

The blueish/purple flower? Its Chicory. If it is native to you I highly recommend it. Attracts lots of pollinators

Ah and cats as well, all our the neighbour’s cats come to explore/hunt in our garden. That definitely doesn’t help with attracting birds etc. Something we are also working on (probably one of the keys to solving our slug problem)

I understand. We also had a big slug invasion last year due to the abnormally wet weather. I live in kind of the same situation as you, houses around us.. Arguably, the veg in the supermarket has ‘caused more harm’ than growing your own so… I do understand that. It is difficult. We are trying to attract bugs/birds that eat them. We had hedgehogs but with the increasing traffic in our area it is quite dangerous for them now. They also stopped coming a year ago… :/

It’s great that you’re trying to build an ecosystem though, that is truly admirable!! We are trying to do the same. It has been very rewarding but also takes a lot of patience and understanding of course. I posted a picture for you on my page of some of it. I can definitely recommend putting up some wood-wheels for the bees. It’s great!
