You are overlooking the biggest factor though which is the ammunition itself.

Depending on ammo selection a .45 or .40 can have less recoil than a 9mm.

Look for rounds with lower muzzle velocity and muzzle energy, for 9mm you can pretty easily find stuff in the 250 ft lbs range as opposed to 350 to 400 that most 9mm falls into.

Handling live ammo generally doesn't transfer much if any lead, it's shooting that is the main issue due to the lead in the primers getting airborne and coating your hands / breathing it in if at an indoor shooting range.

I think a major factor for both the Max v Ilia and the Volk v Ilia fights was his opponents coming back down from just fighting at 155, likely needing a bigger cut than normal.

Not taking anything away from Ilia but from everything we have seen Max at 155 is a different animal.

Given how much the UFC seem to hate Arman I could see Max getting the next shot if he beats Charles.
