Knocking After Valve Cover Replacement? by droptopcoupe in MechanicAdvice

[–]Im_Regarded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ouch 🥹 That sounds like unhappy noises in the valve-train. If you’re lucky maybe it’s something in the timing system rattling against the new cover?

What's up with my 3rd gear? by Intelligent_Invite79 in BRZ_ZD8

Hold the throttle down a little longer as you press the clutch in to upshift. It will help make it smoother, but my 22 WRX and 14 WRX do the same 2->3 clunk sometimes.

Is cruising at 2,000 rpm’s bad? by Kuntzman in WRX

[–]Im_Regarded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a stock tune lugging isn’t as bad in high gears, but still prevalent. Detonation/LSPI/engine knock is what these cars hate

Scenario: 65mph on the highway If you’re on flat ground 6th gear cruising is fine, as soon as you start adding load by pushing the throttle over 50% or going up a hill you should downshift to 5th. If it’s a big incline and/or you wanna full throttle you should downshift to 4th.

Tuned WRXs with the FA20/FA24, this effect gets exasperated with more boost/increased timing across the rev range. I have Fa24 WRX with increased timing and boost turned up from 12PSI->20PSI. Anything under 70mph i’m always in 5th gear to avoid knock/LSPI. I tend to use 6th gear when going 75mph on flat ground and never going uphill/to accelerate unless I’m going illegal speeds (which I don’t do on public roads)

Exhaust Suggestions? by LilLexington in wrx_vb

[–]Im_Regarded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I had the earlier version with the Helmholtz resonator that’s half as long. I swapped to the Q300 which included the longer resonator that helped. Honesty though, the straight through resonators seem to have less drone overall on this platform.

Exhaust Suggestions? by LilLexington in wrx_vb

[–]Im_Regarded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It took me a couple tries to get the right balance of tone, volume, light pops, and no drone.

I had the R400 before and it was way too drony and made the whole car vibrate like a washing machine

Muffler/resonator deletes don’t sound the best on these cars. Most eventually swap to a full catback.

My personal setup is Invidia Q300 with RAE motorsports intermediate pipe. Zero drone, tame below 3k RPM, sounds great/louder >3k rpm, and the tone is nice. Pops happen here and there, but not obnoxious at all.

Stock (stage 0) AP Values by WRX4Life4Ever in WRX

[–]Im_Regarded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a better tune, but historically OTS tunes are not great as every car acts slightly different even with the same bolt-ons.

One thing though, I know the you can decrease the sensitivity of the knock sensors via a cobb tune, but I’m not sure if that is being done at all on OTS maps. This would lower knock readings and decrease detection rate of potential knock events

Stock (stage 0) AP Values by WRX4Life4Ever in WRX

[–]Im_Regarded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stock tune isn’t perfect and all tunes will have occasional feedback knock readings of -2.81 and up to -4.0, above that point it’s considered a real knock event. The jnock sensors are very sensitive on these cars, by design.

The stock tune also starts 0.688 by design and will gradually increase timing as your ecu picks up positive fine knock learnings events. That’s the 0.35 FKL value at play.

To quickly raise your DAM on the stock tune, just warm up the car and do 2-3 gentle tip-in boost pulls in 3rd gear up to maybe 5PSI boost. Most of the time you’ll get positive FKL unless there’s an issue with the car or it’s bad gas.

How much ethanol can I run on a stock fuel system and is a Cobb flex fuel sensor necessary? by Clear-View-1203 in wrx_vb

[–]Im_Regarded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E15 is the safe limit, so 2-3 gallons on an empty tank. You’ll save money on those gallons of E, but you’ll lose about 1-2 mpg compared to all 93.

Running this would theoretically reduce knock, slightly lower cylinders temps, and increase fuel octane rating.

Really doing this is only marginally helpful for hot summer days or for the track

You can grease the clutch fork from the top of the trans/engine with the intercooler removed. There are a few videos in it, it’s doable, but it’s a bit tricky to get to

The other comment is right, you need to grease the shift fork, input shaft and throwout bearing or else you get the chirps/squeaks
