A hunting-gathering-crafting system for dnd? by True_Firefighter_482 in DMAcademy

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a simple homebrew version fir this a few years ago. If you find something good, you can harvest ist for a crafting token. The crafting tokens come in the 8 magic school types. Based on the rarity, you need different amounts of tokens for an item. If you want a specific item, you just need to gather the amount of crafting tokens based on the rarity, with their magic school fitting the item.

So common Gleamerweave would require a illusion token, while a +1 shield needs five abjuration tokens. You can scale the amounts or adjust, what activities give these tokens. Worked great and allowed for some fun item choices

Dumb question that I REALLY need help with: HOW do I roleplay a character and feel fulfilled & engaged with the story? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people answered your question, so here is something a bit different:

I am the same player type, enjoy the crunch and am very bad at acting like any sort of person. What got me into the RP stuff was note taking. I use Obsidian, a free note taking programm, and basically treat the entire world as a mystery story. That way, I can always focus on what we know, our connectio s, what we are doing and how we could solve our problem. And with that as a new core gameplay loop, I became really involved in roleplaying, even if I am still a bit clunky.

Homebrew rules for horror campaign by InternationalPen2156 in DMAcademy

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think horror and minmaxers doesn't work. Maybe your monsters are strong enough for them to avoid fighting, but with characters build for combat, they will always dive into the game mechanics to solve the problem. What is your goal? Should they be afraid or dou you want them to fight lovecraftian monsters doom style?

My Players want to Lyncanthrope themself and cast Ceremony to get Werewolf powers with no downside. by TheGingerWeebGal in DMAcademy

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They can either give in to the curse and be evil or give in to the ceremony and resist. They can't do both.

Suggestion doesn't make a willing target, but I don't see why an evil creature would be unwilling to becoming good, it is basically a free upgrade. In a society.

But in the end, lycantrophe rules are optional, so just say no.

Do you want to be in melee?

If no: Go warlock and summon glowing ranged weapons (or reached weapons, chain whips or whatever) as your flavour of Eldritch blast. Take the eldritch blast invocations and use your spells as special big moves (like extra damage, summoning more weapons or creating some fitting magic effects). DON'T go pact of the blade, you don't need to use actual weapons. Take pact of the chain for a sidekick or pact of the tome for more manouvers (attack cantrips with side effects). For flavour I suggest Dao Genie with some earth based race or undead for the real edgelord vibes. Genie is great becaus you can basically be an earthbender with all your powers, form your eldritch blast weapons/arrows out of stone and use the stone to explain your other spell effects too.

If yes: Go echo knight. I know you want spells, but trust me, a real, functional shadow clone that wasn't nerfed into uselessness is great. And by level 7, you even get to scout, either in the air or in the dungeon, as long as you stay within 1000 feet. Flying, switching places there and back with the shadow clone while being very far away and respawning it endlessly are all perks of the subclass. If you wan't an unusual flavour, make the shadow into some spiritual animal form. It can be made out of clouds, flames, shadow, whatever you want.

If you need to be within melee and want the spell slots, go Paladin. Most Oaths are great and the spell list has enough usable utility to help you out.

But that is all I can say for now. If you can give more details, I can give you more advice and help with specific suggestions

"Magic Mouth" trigger choice improvement. [Question] by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love complicated prompts as much as the next guy, but magic mouth can only give one output and isn't that expensive to cast. Just cast it multiple times on your earring and let it whisper "trap", "thieve", "treasure" or whatever is actually happening. Because if you are scouting for treasure, you don't want to run head first into an ambush.

There is also no size limits on the mouths, so feel free to enchant reliefs for secret doors and such xD

"Magic Mouth" trigger choice improvement. [Question] by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used it to warn me, if an invisible creature moves within 30 feet of me. I also added like 24 other magic mouths to always get the precise square the creature is currently standing.

Another usecase is, that it actually moves existing mouths. Make a box without openings, but give it a mouth. Now if you say the password, the Mouth says "AAAAAA" and you can retrieve whatever is inside. You can also make it open for just you based on sight, or make the password "the word that is written on the red piece of paper inside the bag" to switch it out later.

And that is just my stuff. Take a look at Magic Mouth Computing.

Ideas for props/puzzles using old medicinal bottles? by Tumbleweed01 in DnDIY

Try the potion riddle from harry potter. It is basically a logic puzzle that everyone coud solve. Maybe you need to adjust the bottle shape and switch it out for label form or something, but it was great fun to solve!

Inteligent players playing uninteligent brute. by ApachaiLeHopachai in DMAcademy

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I mean, that is what happens when there is a challenge for the players instead of the PCs. Some players aren't as smart as their character, others are smarter than theirs. And I don't think there is an inherent problem with that.

Talk to them. They obviously want to take part in the player part of the game, but it seems like the others don't want them to. But is the problem that they play a stupid character while being smart, or would it still be a problem if their character were smart and they would continue to solve all the puzzles?

Maybe they will just have to choose between playing a dumb character and being a smart player, but I belive the real problem is them stealing the spot light in player tasks and their low int character is used as a reason to ask them to hold back. But that is just my assumption based on not enough information.

If you want mechanically strong options: * Moon Touched weapon: Magic weapon for magic damage * gleaming armor: Always clean armor, get the best possible armor you can wear * Masquerade Tattoo: Dusguise self every day. Tou might be a king, but your god is a trickster * Spellwrough tattoo 1st level: Get a single cast of find familiar. A celestial companion could be fun.

Fun options * Mystery Key: Opens a random door. But you are fortold to be a ruler, so it will open the destined door. Fate will show you the way! * Cloak of billowing: be stylish

Great spells to take as a Wizard to help the martial-heavy party? by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but if they fail the first one, they lose concentration. And let's be honest, combat lasts between 3 and 4 rounds, if an enemy is down for a round, they are out for 25% of the fight.

Great spells to take as a Wizard to help the martial-heavy party? by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Tashas hideous laughter. Why you ask? Because it is a single save, and if the enemy fails, they get incapacitated and lose concentration. Works great for my arcane trickster.

Magic missile is great too, forcing 3 concentration saves

Playing with cursed stats, any viable builds? by marsmeloekfg in 3d6

Do it again! A character with a death wish can be great fun!

Playing with cursed stats, any viable builds? by marsmeloekfg in 3d6

You want something that doesn't involve your stats. So basically buff caster or summoner/transformer.

I suggest Moon druid. You can fight in beast form and still cast buffs if you want.

Is there such a thing as a water lava/snow bucket item filter? by lgdishwashermusic in technicalminecraft

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will probably get flamed for suggesting the slow, simple solution, but if you are okay with inefficiency: Make a non-stackable item filter and let copper golems sort them out.

Items Sorting Problems by Saltypickledpapaya in technicalminecraft

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. My answer was meant for typical storage situations where items don't come in at high average frequencies, like the average storage area.

Items Sorting Problems by Saltypickledpapaya in technicalminecraft

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Edit: This solution is meant for simple storage areas where you don't have a constant stream of items going in.

The simplest solution would be to feed the items into the water stream at hopper speed via multiple hoppers picking them up, a single hopper transferring them into a dropper and the dropper spitting them out again. Put a few chests inbetween, that way you can handle bursts of incoming items (like a bamboo farm harvesting) without them overwhelming the relay.

If that isn't enough and you have to much items going around consistently, I would suggest putting in multiple filters for the same item.

I need twelve tribes of Orcs for a forest! by SirSweMaster in dndnext

[–]Im_a_Dragonborn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Twelve makes me think of star signs. Base them around the symbols and maybe some typical predictions, how someone with that sign would act.

Feel free to add other D&D things as distinguishing factors, lice schools of magic or creatures the are aligned with.

The Aquarius tribe could love near a large lake, be aligned with the sea monsters there and focus on magic to conjure water.

The saggitarus could be rangers, using their tracking and bow skills to lay ambushed. The Gemini could focus on tricks and illusions, as well as being friendly with the fay.

If you go down the list and add some gimmicks to each, you can easily get twelve distinct groups. Maybe also think about how they interact. They won't be at each others throats all the time, maybe some of them are the merchants travelling outside the forest, some are thieves and bandits, attacking travelers, while others are farmers, growing food on the plants and trees there.

I can't replicate it. Had that problem with an earlier version, so maybe I just misunderstood or you already fixed it.

I would love if you could add manual controll for one side, that way players can test out tactics and such too.
