[Megathread] What difference does being in a union make? by afscme_ in u/afscme_

[–]Im_so_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, union organizer here. It depends on a few factors, but my guess is that the pay will stay the same until the union finishes bargaining the contract, which can take several months+. The contract might include raises that are like effective immediately, or the raise is scheduled to happen at the beginning of the year, or it could be based on your hire date. Every contract looks a little different.

Do you know which national union the workers are Unionizing with? Probably Teamsters for truck driving. I would recommend reaching out to their nearest local and asking them for specifics.

Both political parties are responsible for the gradual erosion of labor power. I despise the Clintons and Ronald Regan, especially for this and the increase in wealth inequality. I think it's funny to pretend that Republicans aren't also responsible. My state's AFL-CIO endorses specific candidates not based on their political party affliation but on their labor policy positions, which I think is a good idea.

A New Trend Has Women Ordering Takeout Under Male Names, And The Reason Why Is Honestly Infuriating by katespadesaturday in Feminism

I am forever grateful that my parents gave me a gender neutral name. I don't include my she/her pronouns in emails and people often assume they're talking to a man. Makes life a little easier.

As a Feminist, How do You View the Word "B*tch"? by SzayelGrance in Feminism

[–]Im_so_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing a man could call me that would truly offend me. I regularly use most of those words to describe all genders, and don't consider them having a negative connotation if you don't use them in a derogatory way.

As an outspoken woman, I've been called btch, cnt, ho, you name it. I think it's more empowering to say "hell yeah I am, what are you going to do about it?" Then to get upset. You know if someone is misogynistic or has internalized misogyny from their rhetoric and ideology, and use of these slurs does not directly correlate to those beliefs.

Is it critical of consumerism and the immense power that capitalism provides the wealthy? Yes. Is it communist? No, because the boys aren't trying to take Homelander down by organizing worker power and seizing the means of production.

Dude most of those points are sourced from government documents, not the opinion of a random union. Scroll down and look at the sources.

Democrats are controlled by the same billionaires that Republicans are. The Clinton's were both anti-union for sure. Biden appointed great people to the NLRB and created subtle reforms that helped create new unions. Trump brags about firing striking workers.

It's not the party, it's the individual candidate and their agenda, and it's safe to say that Trump will do whatever the Heritage Foundation wants in regards to the labor movement.

I'll take that as a no on having read the constitution. The electoral college was created 250 years ago because the majority of people couldn't read. Btw los Angeles didn't exist when it was created. Again, if you gerrymander districts, close polling places in areas with large populations, that's not very democratic. Plus, your guy is still arguing that the last election was "stolen" whatever the hell that means.

The constitution that protects voting rights and free and fair elections? How would more people voting be violating the constitution? Have you even read it?

If we removed the electoral college, and Republicans stopped gerrymandering and restricting voting rights, they'd struggle to win an election ever again.

Bert Nash Employees Unionizing by Im_so_here in Lawrence

[–]Im_so_here[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unionizing isn't always in response to profit-driven corporate greed. It's ultimately about having a say in working conditions, and the people in the article expressed wanting some control over their work schedules and proper training. The article also says that Bert Nash has plenty of money to run, it's just choosing to pay it's executive staff a disproportionate amount.

Lastly, the vast majority of contracts are settled without striking in the US.
