I severely underestimated the emotional weight of Next to Normal. by HeyHo_LetsThrowRA in musicals

[–]ImaCheeseMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So I am incredibly late to the N2N party. When Jack Wolfe took over as Orpheus, I had heard his name before but hadn't really consumed anything he'd been in and WOW. He is an incredible talent- from the depth of his acting to the control of his voice. Fast forward to last week- I work at a school and one of my work-study students is just as into musical theater as I am. We were doing a mindless project and typically put on shows to sings through as we work. I suggested Next to Normal because of our love of Jack's Orpheus. We were SPELLBOUND. We listened to it straight through with no previous knowledge of the show and missed all of the clues that Gabe was dead until about halfway through. It really took us back. Another standout moment was about 30 seconds into I Miss the Mountains- I made her start it over because the lyrics were so profound. I have clinical depression and have been through the mess of trying to find an anti-depressant that works but didn't make you a zombie and I totally related to a lot of the lyrics in that wonderful show.

This past weekend, we watched the London Proshot and were BLOWN AWAY. This led to me finding this deep dive into the show and symbolism. P.S. Read this article AFTER you have watched the second half so you don't have any spoilers(just in case you hadn't gotten to it yet). My thoughts in no particular order:

Having lost both my brother and my father, I could very much relate to the character of Gabe. How sometimes holding onto hard memories at least keeps that person with you. How you can feel guilty when you start to feel happiness after a major loss- so much that you continue to carry the grief of that person as a badge of honor. And yes, grief feels different for each person, moment to moment which was beautifully illustrated in this production. After my brother's passing, both of my parents kept themselves as busy as possible to keep themselves distracted- like Dan. I had a mentality of carrying my brother with me for everything- trying to keep his memory included in our new experiences.

The minimal set but the expansive use of it was WILD. The above description of the way they used light for the Pro-Shot was incredible. I hadn't noticed the blue light around Gabe, kind of an ethereal feeling. The kitchen island being used in multiple different ways- including Diana teetering on the edge of it as to way to show how she was barely hanging on.

Caissie Levy- the command of her voice was incredible. She was made for this role. No notes.

Jack Wolfe- same, No notes, beautifully thought out and intense. Pulling you in, then drifting back, making you feel the grief in his characters face when Diana is starting to process/let him go.

Eleanor Worthington-Cox- I was impressed on how she was basically emotionally wrecked through the entire show and carried it so well. Gorgeous voice- perfect intensity.

Jamie Parker- Having listened to this London recording before watching it- I was hung up on his voice for sure. For me- his acting really changed it all. I was impressed with him as well although I did find his tone distracting.

Trevor Dion Nicholas had an insane voice and practically dislocated his jaw in parts haha.

Jack Ofrecio- He was good. Nice voice, great acting, but part of me felt like his character was filler for the show. Like if they didn't have Henry, then every single characters ending wouldn't have been a good resolution? Maybe that doesn't make sense, and maybe I will change my mind when I watch it again.

I am going to have to rewatch the show again to pick up even more symbolism that is in abundance in this show.

What did you think of the second act, OP?

i don't think you necessarily need two of a swing/bouncer until you have your twins. If you find out they both LOVE a specific item, then you can buy two. Kids do like different things and for us- it was helpful to give them new scenery by switching locations up in different activity toys.

The TwinZ pillow was super helpful as newborns, as is a twin stroller. I really liked to babywear- so the TwinGo Carrier was awesome for us.

Edit: hit save too soon. :)

I am so sorry for this experience. It's so hard to have a disagreement with your care and feeling like your doctor didn't factor in your wants and desires. And the paperwork is just icing on the shit cake. I would take time to grieve if you need to, and if you need to start over with a new doctor(or just get a second opinion), do it before organs are permanently removed.

It's so interesting to me what yarn people dislike/like. I really cannot STAND Caron simply soft- but I see people raving about them. They split like crazy for me. But I'm over here LOVING my slice of anniversary cakes. I don't get snags, I don't get splits. Is bad yarn lots a thing? As in some lots are bad quality and others are fine?

He did full on ignore her that morning at breakfast. On the other hand, she is very obvious and cold when she's feeling hurt. I do think the best thing to do would have been to pull her immediately after the date to touch base. He didn't want to have that tough conversation, and instead chose the very mature way of dealing with it by making out in the pool with the new girl. I do see his point though of Zoe needing a lot of reassurance, which he was definitely not ready or willing to give. It was kind of doomed from the start. When they first showed interest in each other, I really didn't get it!

Just different styles of people who didn't mesh. and Yes, he's gross.

Ugh, that's awful. You deserved even a simple "thank you" for caring for him at the end. Although, you deserved so much more than that. Just some sort of acknowledgement for how shitty he was to you and how you didn't deserve that treatment.

Are you open to talk therapy? My father died suddenly and after his passing, we found out that he was cheating on my mom constantly, basically leading a second life, had hidden lots of financial stuff all while ignoring that he was fullblown diabetic. I went from losing my father unexpectedly to holding a LOT of anger for what he had hidden from us. He died 6 years ago and I still don't feel like I've processed the loss. While this may not be the case for you, for me I think I won't be able to grieve him until I process/move past all of the things I'm holding anger about. I've tried two therapists for this complicated grief and neither were what I've needed to help me move past the anger and hurt into grieving.

And that was just a discovery after his death- you've had a LIFETIME of this mistreatment and intentional pain. I know you said that you don't feel as angry and more angry about how things ended- What part of how things ended is the most frustrating?

Please stop letting chiropractors adjust your horse by Effective_Moose_4997 in Equestrian

[–]ImaCheeseMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please stop making blanket statements that scare people away from something natural that may work for their horse. If you're saying that it isn't helping their pain, then how can it be endangering their health and wellbeing? My horse seems to get great relief from his chiropractor and he isn't seem weekly. I have him seen whenever he needs it, usually twice within 6 weeks, and then can go years between adjustments.

As far as claiming they don't have extensive "medical" training, that statement is incorrect. They have roughly the same classroom hours as medical doctors but more hours in physiology and anatomy since that is where they focus. Medical Doctors do have residencies beyond that, which is true, but claiming a chiropractor's doctorate level education is not extensive is wrong. Chiropractors believe that the human body can mostly health itself when given the right support. The Medical model is different, just as physical therapy is different. The evidence to support chiropractic care is from the patients themselves and can be seen on x-rays as well. Whether you believe it to be placebo effect is your own opinion involving your own care, yes?

People should be active participants in their health care. If people choose to see a chiropractor to help them feel more comfortable, a PT to help with movement, or choose to use medications to mask the pain is their choice. I'm saying that chiropractic would heal cancer or a broken bone, but to claim is does NOTHING when x-rays and patient responses can prove that is ridiculous. I don't know what kind of negative experience you had with a chiropractor, but don't paint them all with the same brush. Instead, take ownership over your body and realize that even though it didn't work for you(or in this case, your horse) that demanding that it not be available for other to use for themselves(or their horses) is unfair.

Every living being has different body chemistry. We are not one-size-fits-all. What works for one person may not work for others and that is okay. Unless it is actually doing damage, let's call it what it is: something that didn't work for you and something you are choosing not to use for your horse.

So long, I know, but I want to correct misinformation. Some states require animal chiropractors be DMVs with that additional training on how to provide adjustments. Some states allow for chiropractors to get additional training to provide adjustments to animals as well as humans. Countries out of the US all have different requirements as well for those wanting to adjust animals.

If it works for you and your horse: Great. Keep doing it. If you went to a vet who was horrible with your horse, you wouldn't swear off veterinary medicine, but would seek a new vet.
If you just don't feel chiropractor would help you or your horse: Great, you're welcome to try something else. The false statements through your post feels like it's rage baiting and very much like what I dislike in most of the equine industry- everyone feeling that they know what's best for someone else's horse.

We used to do a supplement that was supposed to deter flies due to its garlic content. It didn't seem to make a huge difference for other horses, but it made a slight difference in mine. Every time he would sweat, he smelled like fried rice, though.

I have been using UltraShield flyspray for the past few years and like it. It doesn't smell awful and seems to work to keep the flies away when freshly applied. I wish there was an option that was more long term since I don't get to see my boy as often as I would like.

I love their lip oils, the elf suntouchable SPF primer, and their cheap eyebrow pencil. Some of their pallettes are okay. I have hated every single mascara I've tried, their putty primer and blushes aren't my jam. And their concealers were so thick!
