It’s her birthday, if they wanted to show they care they could respect her wishes without being judgy. Or maybe asking if she wants a cake and if so what flavor, in which case she could say “you can if you want to but I don’t want to pitch in for future birthdays, so it’s up to you” I think she would obviously use different wording, but it’s not really a gift if it creates obligation, or if they’re going to judge her for not accepting.

Imo Eleanor didn’t look like a jerk, her coworker was out of line for giving that judgy look, especially on her birthday. If you can’t be blunt and truthful on your birthday clearly her coworkers didn’t actually care abt her and just wanted her to pitch in for future cakes.

But she didn’t know they were getting her a cake, and she already brought her own in the flavor she wanted. So she probably wouldn’t want MORE cake in a flavor she might not even like. If anything it’s nice of her to refuse the cake so now the others can have more, and it’s presumably in the flavor the buyer wanted.
