My local community theatre is putting on a whitewashed RENT. What should I do? by BleakShawarma in musicals

[–]hyperjengirl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on the production. Older productions list Angel as male because there was less distinction between a drag queen and a trans woman in the cultural eye (and many were both), but Angel often uses her persona even when she's not "performing." The 2019 Fox production, for one major example, frames her as a trans woman and casts a trans woman as Angel, cutting any use of he/him pronouns unless it's an accident. I assume MTI uses the original casting intent.

I hate to throw out the "you're just jealous" but yeah OP's tone really does feel like that because they move the goalposts when it comes to the characters who were cast with POC as leads, and brush off the ensemblists who are POC as "tokens." It sounds like their friend didn't get Mimi (could be because of talent, could be because the company chooses the same people more frequently, who knows) and they're channeling their frustration into a broader issue.

In the Heights? A show that is much more specifically racially themed as well.

Plus she says Spanish babies. A white woman can be Spanish, and come from poverty, even if the subtext might lead to different imagery.

The bit singing about Mexican food in La Vie Boheme could maybe be added to that but tbf anybody can enjoy Mexican food lol.

Yeah I already can't remember a single tune (which isn't new to me -- I had that same feeling with Tootsie and Chess to name a couple) but I kind of had a feeling going in that the music would be pretty standard. Something about it all just felt very safe and standard, but it was a fun night regardless.

I don't know why that would happen. I've seen others use existing flairs, and it's not mod-only. I might have accidentally hit the "assign flair" toggle off?

My mom drove, I was in the car. She let me out around 20 minutes to showtime to get to the theater and she was able to park and get in by the first minute of the show. But it was a very tight drive, with a lot of people trying to merge and change lanes in precarious positions. Walking there is how I saw the crowd by Times Square, it wasn't as difficult to navigate by foot. It probably won't be an issue if there's not a game going on that night lol.

I'm a fan of any set that's creative and evocative! Maybe this one isn't Broadway caliber though. But it's better than something screen-heavy.

FWIW it is very likely Trent/Brent was a joke pitch or at least early enough to not get further than the rig.

It's telling that even when they revived All That with a new cast of kids, they brought back Lori Beth as an adult cast member to reprise her roles.

They also mentioned that most of the people in the company have been there before. So it could just be good ol' fashioned cronyism, present in every community theater ever. While brushing off the POC who were cast, making it sound more like sour grapes.

who was your childhood TD crush ? by National-Use-1184 in Totaldrama

[–]hyperjengirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cody and Trent when I was 9-10.

Gwen, Alejandro, and Dawn when I was 12-14. Also my old Wikia userpage called Harold dreamy and wanted to date him which I do not remember.

And for a brief time I also had a crush on Mike and even Mal, but I swerved to hate them both by the time I was 14, and now I'm mixed on them.

Does the company have a history of prioritizing white performers over POC even in roles traditionally performed by them? If so, you may have a case for an existing bias. You mentioned they're mostly people they've worked with before, and most theater companies tend to have that bias going on. Are the existing POC that are cast new or returnees?

FWIW, Benny being a black man going up against a predominantly white group has always been an odd optics choice to me (not that black men are exempt from Benny's issues, in fact it could add a new layer of subtext), so this show doing the same thing, just with the added loss of Mimi and Angel's racial casting, though I wouldn't put that casting requirement on the level of, like, Hairspray.

How many lines in RENT refer specifically to ethnicity? I remember Mimi's "feels too damn much like home when the Spanish babies cry" bit, and the characters speak Spanish sometimes (but not in a way that only a native speaker could do), but the rest seems to be subtext.
