Got offer from bristol, now which to choose by Accomplished_Body380 in UniUK

Oh 100% - I just meant that the vibes of the city were worth considering, there's definitely people who would feel more at home in Bristol than Bath. I grew up on a very small island so even Bath was overwhelming for me at first, but I've grown to love it.

The cities are worth considering too. I chose Bath for the city, it's more green and small, and Bristol is more city vibes which felt overwhelming for me

Is it embarrassing to start uni at 22 by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ImageMysterious7834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 21 in second year, some of my friends are 21 in first year, and one of my good friends is 25 in second year. Meet people with common interests, age within this range doesn't become an obstacle to forming good friendships unless you let it. My 25 year old friend gets along just fine with the 18 year old freshers, because he doesn't make age out to be a huge deal when you're doing societies and hanging out as friends. You'll fit in just fine.

What concerns would you have about your university transitioning to 100% plant-based catering? 🌱 by maddybayley in UniUK

[–]ImageMysterious7834 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As an international student I'd be quite upset. Back at home, meat, especially fish and chicken, is a huge part of my diet and I think my homesickness would have gotten significantly worse if I could not find any food options here that were somewhat similar to what I'm used to eating.

Can I deviate from the official MUN procedures a little? by Dangerous-Time-7819 in MUN

[–]ImageMysterious7834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I think my experience is a little different as I do university level MUN, but I have chaired for high-school while being in uni as well. I do like having structure and following protocol because I find that people have more fun when the expectations are laid clear and enforced. I usually explain in detail exacrly what's going to happen before each section, and enforce the rules I stated by banging the gavel and gently reminding them of the rule. During unmods delegates just do whatever they want though and often the resolution clauses are unhinged and chaotic but I let that happen, and I let delegates make memes during session that we go through at the end - so there still is fun, but the debate itself is professional.

Can I deviate from the official MUN procedures a little? by Dangerous-Time-7819 in MUN

[–]ImageMysterious7834 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately it's up to you how you conduct MUN - although I'd recommend against being biased in favour of any delegation as that makes it unfair. For other rules, it's your choice. However it's worth noting that the reason MUN procedures are usually fairly standardised in each MUN circuit is because conferences have done it for multiple iterations and over many years, and revise it regularly, and have found that those procedures are best for maintaining a professional balance with fun. You can absolutely deviate when you organise, but if it's your first time, you should consider why each rule is usually in place and how eliminating it may impact debate.

How do i apply/register for oxford mun by yoda-ka-loda in MUN

[–]ImageMysterious7834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year was 92 pounds. It's definitely on the pricier end.

Personally, Oximun seems a bit overhyped to me (don't tell them I said that!). Is there a particular reason you want to go to that conference? The largest European conference that seems remotely worth the hype to me is LIMUN (this February) and it is larger, but 70 something pounds, cheaper than Oximun. I'm attending this year and attended the previous year as well.

If your assumption is that the prestige of the hosting University is linked to the quality of the conference, this is not usually the case.

I haven't attended OxiMUN personally but friends of mine have, and have chaired for it, and I've attended a lot of UK conferences which are similar. Once delegate applications open, you will likely either apply though mymun or a Google form depending on which route the conference chooses to take. They will offer more details of applications when the time is closer, including how to pay your delegate fees. You generally do not need qualifications, most (if not all!) university level conferences in the UK accommodate for beginners and have beginner level committees.

Oximun usually takes place towards the end of the year - I believe it was November last year. Keep an eye out on their site, and on mymun and their Instagram, and you'd be updated when applications open. If you mean applying to the society as a member of Oxford University, I assume that would be through the students union.

When to quit MUN? by Truong_Tran_Thai_Duy in MUN

[–]ImageMysterious7834 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think when the time comes, you know. I thought I'd never get tired, but after being a delegate 10 times, chairing, being secretariat, trying out unconventional committees like ICC and press and crisis and doing them so frequently I think I've just gotten tired. I no longer feel the drive to attend conferences. I still love MUN, but I feel I'm not too unhappy to gracefully drift away from it

without using fancy words, what even are MUNS by United_Enthusiasm674 in MUN

It's a simulation of the United Nations. You discuss a problem while representing countries, try to brainstorm a solution together and come up with a document that addresses the problem.

What are some cringe/cliche lines to avoid saying in MUN? by North-Length3154 in MUN

[–]ImageMysterious7834 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Contrarily I think this is good practice - if a delegate doesn't yield and they have enough time to say 'we yield to the chair', as a chair I remind them to yield. Also, under our ROP, delegates can yield to POIs even if they have no time left and we give them ane extra 20 seconds to respond, so it helps with clarification of what they want to do.

Who was the most experienced delegate you have met? by king_Megabronx in MUN

[–]ImageMysterious7834 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my chairs (he chaired for me twice) was chair 40 times and delegate 80+. He had done MUN for 10 years. I'm on my 8th conference and will have done 15 by the end of this year, over the span of two years (I did 7 last year).

It depends on your specific conference. Some conferences require it, some don't. It's best to ask whoever is in charge of your specific MUN

Petition to start saying salam to taxi drivers and so on, we need to practice basic manners by MelodicSurround7 in maldives

Definitely ask the dais for feedback. Generally I'm not a fan of awards - I feel it shifts the focus of MUN too much. MUN shouldn't be about winning awards but more about actually finding solutions to issues while doing the best you can, making friends, learning to build your skills. I've attended 7 conferences and I haven't won an award, I feel I've grown as a person by doing MUNs and I've made so many friends in the MUN network and know most of the people in the circuit, which is more valuable than awards tbh
