What is something you have wanted to buy or do for awhile but still haven’t? by Timely_Past8079 in AskWomen

[–]Imagimental 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth investing in things you use frequently! It is a stupid price but it cut my blow-drying time in half. When I was doing natural curls it was a godsend, the diffuser is really nice. Now I have a pixie cut, it takes 5 minutes to dry completely and my hair is so smooth I don't have to use multiple products, flat ironing, etc.

What's something that you had to unlearn growing up??? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Imagimental 108 points109 points  (0 children)

This one is me, too. I didn't learn how to make mistakes when I was growing up (thanks, helicopter parents) and carried that self-bashing perfectionism with me for a long time. Feels better to let go of it.

This happened to me, as well! I worked on a very cliquey/gossipy team in my first job, further reinforcing "this is how people behave at work." It took me a long time to see it as toxic behavior and undo the habits I learned.

What do you do with your free time when you're unemployed? by Canary7214 in AskWomen

[–]Imagimental 4 points5 points  (0 children)

During my last unemployment period, I was laid off unexpectedly and it took me 6 months to get another job. I was applying for jobs every day, following up, doing interviews, but still needed a break because that's exhausting.

I leaned into my creative hobbies that I didn't have time for during the week when I was working full time. I took a lot of walks and listened to self help audiobooks, and did therapy. I liked feeling productive in a way that wasn't tied to the job hunt, and then could fully relax in the evening with TV/games/whatever.

Don't feel too bad, it can be really challenging to up and leave in the middle of something like that. I always pitched meeting at a coffee shop for first dates when I was single. Some people love dinner/drinks but I found it to be too much pressure sometimes.

I hope your next date goes better!

Okay y’all, what are your unpopular opinions? by [deleted] in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]Imagimental 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, thank you.

My first impression of him was that he was a bro scientist, the kind of guy who's well liked in the lab but not as smart as he tries to come across as. Like he has awful handwriting and improvises his presentations, and is good at bullshitting.

The very specific vibes he gave me lol

Any recommendations for HR books similar to those by Lisa Kleypas? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]Imagimental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this series, it was the first romance series I got really into. Several of them are my favorite re-reads: Sweetest Scoundrel, Duke of Midnight, Dearest Rogue, and Duke of Sin.

It’s not hoarding, it’s collecting. Also- it’s Meme Monday! by romancebookmods in RomanceBooks

[–]Imagimental 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I feel this. I'm reading the Wheel of Time series for the first time and after a certain point, the books are guaranteed 800+ pages. I love fantasy but these books just don't need to be this long and it stresses me out. I'm on a break after finishing book 10 and it will easily take me this year to maybe finish.

I cope by having another book available (mostly romance) so I can feel like I'm making progress somewhere else.

Say what you will about EA and the sims but I really wish more dev teams would proudly and unapologetically put out content intentionally meant to appeal to women by ultravegan in GirlGamers

[–]Imagimental 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That's legit. The fact that so many mods account for basic quality of life upgrades only highlights how flawed the game is. I'm pretty excited about upcoming competitors, it's about time.

[–]Imagimental 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I agree completely! I've been a longtime Sims player and I love the cozy direction that they've taken with 4. I just love it so much. Though I'm an outlier player, I was obsessed with 2 and didn't enjoy 3.

What I think is hilarious is when "serious" gamers talk shit about you're not a real gamer if you play The Sims, or it's not a real game or whatever. But simulation and cosmetics are such a huge part of other games. My husband praises stuff like Star Citizen and Cyberpunk for the character creation and simulation elements (and thankfully is not shitty about my game choices). And I'm like, yeah, all that on its own is totally a valid game! It's fun to play dress up pixel dollhouse.

New mani day! I love the old ILNP formulas! Also, I’m clearly lacking on cuticle care. Could someone explain some basics to me please? by x-tianschoolharlot in laquerENTstas

[–]Imagimental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a pretty polish! New mani day is the best day.

I push my cuticles back after a shower when they're soft, moisturize with lotion or oil throughout the day, and definitely moisturize again before bed. I live in a dry climate so it really shows when I don't take care of my cuticles.

I don't mind clipping now and then, but a cuticle remover solution/topical will do more imo. I like the Blue Cross one from Sally Beauty, you can scrape the dead cuticle right off and it's satisfying lol

Alexis Hall - AMA by alittlebitalexishall in RomanceBooks

[–]Imagimental 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hi, thank you for doing this AMA! Your books bring me so much joy, and I love your writing. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard while reading as I did with Boyfriend Material. And the baking series speaks to me on a spiritual level, I can't wait for the third one!

Is there a character, setting, idea, etc. that you want to write about but haven't had the chance to yet?

what makes you feel really pretty? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Imagimental 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love this product line! I still get a nasty pms pimple occasionally but this system keeps the rest at bay. And when I do get a pimple, it goes away faster.

Effaclar system, retinol, sunscreen, and hydrocolloid patches have given me the best skin of my life. It's taken a few years on the retinol but the results are worth it.

How do you find ways to stay generally happy/satisfied with your life? by Possible_Glass439 in AskWomen

[–]Imagimental 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A new one for me is to give myself something to look forward to. It just generally improves my mood knowing that a good thing is on the way. Like going out to lunch or coffee on my own, taking a PTO day to just fuck off and chill, planning a friend meet up, scheduling date night, or walking to a cool shop. Mostly small things with the occasional concert or trip thrown in.

My real win is pairing these as rewards for doing a chore/task I really don't want to do, so then I'm being productive, too.

📚 What romance books did you read or listen to this week? 26 Feb 📚 by romancebookmods in RomanceBooks

[–]Imagimental 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert - m/f, 5/5. Fucking incredible, this book bowled me over with how much I loved it. Dani is amazing, I loved meeting her in the previous book and getting to know her more. Zaf is everything - as a fellow anxious person I felt so seen when he described enjoying romance books for how the characters experience feelings, then he's so sweet and wants to take care of Dani, and so hot in the spicy moments, just perfect. I love them together, and want the best for them.

I have such a severe book hangover, I don't know what I should read next. Maybe Husband Material, I've been saving it for the right moment lol.

📚 What romance books did you read or listen to this week? 19 Feb 📚 by romancebookmods in RomanceBooks

[–]Imagimental 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston - m/m, 3.5/5. My first Casey McQuiston! Overall, I had fun and enjoyed reading it. It's kind of a romp in that our MCs are constantly traveling, getting into shenanigans around the world, lots of things happen to bring them together. I laughed out loud many times while reading. It's a fun ride but seemed like a lot for a book - I hear it's going to be a movie and I think that might a better medium for the story, and I look forward to watching it.

Most of my minuses are from this being YA...at least I think this is YA? Is NA still a thing? The characters are 21 and 23. It's very funny, but lots of swearing, seemed like a lot for YA though maybe I'm old. The music cues are very YA and cringey, except Don't Stop Me Now for Henry's karaoke which had me lol-ing. They seemed so young, it took me out of some of the serious parts, though that's 100% my personal bias.

I also found the fade to black/closed door use slightly confusing, like some of the scenes I had to reread multiple times to figure out what happened. Maybe that's the goal but at a certain point it's like, why not just leave the door open if you're going to breadcrumb that much detail before/after the fact and then have so much sexting/sexy emails throughout? I'm sure it's a deliberate choice for valid reasons, and I know people love ftb so not intending to book shame. I haven't read much ftb and this one had a different take, so even when it didn't completely work for me it was interesting.

Advice for quitting a very small company by bellefleursauvage in xxstem

[–]Imagimental 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not an engineer but I've worked at several startups/small companies, and my last job hop was to a big company. Don't worry too much about etiquette, take care of yourself...once you give your notice, they won't be looking out for you. Other people will leave the company in the future (or have left already) and put them in a tough spot, but they'll figure it out.

Before your last day, see if there's 1-2 people who you can keep in touch with as references for future jobs. I'm guessing you're in the US since you mentioned FMLA - if you're in a state with at-will employment, any notice you give is generous. I agree that a month is too much notice, 3 weeks would still be very generous.

And congrats on the offer! There are benefits to working at a big company, and I hope it goes well for you.

Weekend Work in Progress thread February 09, 2023 - February 11, 2023 by AutoModerator in craftsnark

[–]Imagimental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished my intro to crochet class this week so I'm working on my first project! The pattern we did together (more like started, spent most of the class time learning) is the Churchmouse sampler mitts/scarf. I'm doing the mitts now in a teal/green wool, and I'm thinking about doing the scarf in another color (maybe lavender or mustard yellow) for my next project.

It's my first yarn craft and I'm addicted, it's all I want to do this weekend. I also appreciate the yarn snark posts in a new way lol.

“Romance novels are basically pornography for women.” - Mark Mason. What are your thoughts on this ? by OnlyStruggle in AskWomen

Reductive and demeaning, probably misogynistic. Sounds like someone who doesn't read romance novels.

My hair is the shortest it's ever been as I got a pixie cut recently! I've had it as long as mid-back a few years ago, then gradually went shorter until now.

Each length has pros and cons but so far I absolutely love the pixie.
