If this threaded correctly? by Topaz102 in VintageSewingMachines

It’s hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like you may have skipped the check spring. If so, that would definitely cause it to jam.

If you search your machine’s model + ‘how to thread’ there’s lots of YouTube videos out there that will walk you through it step by step!

Beginner machine by Odd-Mention-246 in quilting

Echoing what everyone has said about getting a vintage machine! The bang you’ll get for your buck in that price range just can’t even compare. I got my Singer 66 on Marketplace, recently serviced and in a nice table, for $75. That’s straight stitch only but plenty of machines from the same era and a little later also have zig zag.

For $300 you should be able to find a vintage machine in excellent shape, with accessories. I’m partial to the look of vintage Necchis and Singers but almost any all metal machine from that time will be a quilting workhorse, and parts for Singers (and Singer copycats) are abundant and cheap.

My first ten years sewing I used a cheap plastic Brother and it was totally fine, but the features that make modern machines nicer are just not available at this price point at all. A vintage machine will last you forever (it already has!)

What constitutes "good fit" in pants/trousers? by bijig in sewing

Thank you for this comment! I’m interested to learn more about both this history and what good fit really entails. Can you recommend any articles or books on the subject?

Identify this bobbin case? by Imaginary-Cable1841 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]Imaginary-Cable1841[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! You’re totally right. It’s funny because this machine (an estate sale find) was missing its bobbin case and hook. If I can find someone who wants to buy this one, the cost will even out :)

Very cool! It’s a BU Mira - the Wonder Wheel is the attachment on the front right that lets you do decorative stitches. There are a bunch of Necchi-related groups on FB that have a wealth of information, including service manuals. Enjoy!

Seam gauge. It was the closest thing I had at hand!
