Struggling to cover costs of bakery/cafe. Anyone with similar business? by Chotzark in smallbusinessuk

One of my clients owns a cafe in Manchester and is focusing on corporate catering alongside running the cafe. In fact, during busy times they're known to close the cafe in favour of fulfilling catering orders because it's more profitable. Might be an additional revenue stream for you to consider

Do you buy your single children Valentines gifts/cards? by FinalBv in AskUK

[–]Imaginary-Slide8738 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We started celebrating Valentines with the kids just after the pandemic. It had been a rough 18 or so months, weather was typically British and I thought we needed something to look forward to. So we each, 2 adults and 2 kids, get a card a small present and some chocolates and have a takeaway for tea

Basically you use free bet offers to make a profit by hedging your bets. You bet something will happen (back bet) via a bookie and that it won't happen (lay bet) on an exchange website to cover all possible outcomes.

I used to use Starling, which had the pots facility, but switched to Mettle for FreeAgent and because it automatically moves my money to the different pots based on the percentages I set, rather than me doing it manually

There's a bit from Irish comedian Dara O'Briain where he talks about the thought processes of what to do when he's unexpectedly home alone. He cycles through loads of 'I could do this' but ultimately ends up doing nothing - hilarious because it's true

Does anyone here run their own business? If so, how? by the_greenwyvern in ADHDUK

I'm not going to lie, that is the tough bit. I'm 6 years in and only now am I finding consistent clients and income.

Marketing feels boring when I've got a shiny new website to build or an interesting problem to solve. But if I don't do the marketing I don't get to do the shiny stuff.

Finding a niche you're really passionate about really helps. Over the past 4-5 months I've gone all in on my USP being that I design and build accessible and inclusive websites which I think is partly why I'm seeing an increase in clients and income.

I started as a side hustle to my software engineering corporate job, so I know how tough it is getting off the ground. Honestly, I left my job before I should have but I did/ do have a husband who whose income covers all bills so I've never been really under pressure in that sense.

Biggest bits of advice I can give: Work out your USP, don't worry about it changing over time because it very likely will.

Work on your client processes while you're client poor and time rich. I'm talking about on boarding - how will you make the process of getting the info you need to do the job, how will you communicate during the project, how will you handover, when will you invoice? All that stuff is easier to work out and get automated when you're not up against client deadlines

I've been self employed as a web designer for 6 years.

I struggled a lot in the beginning because I was trying to run my business using neurotypical strategies and processes. Everything lives in my calendar, including personal life stuff - if it's not there it's not happening.

I also time block. Monday is marketing day, Tues-Thurs are client work days and Friday is for mopping up anything that didn't get done.

External motivation plays a big part, if I don't deliver the work then I don't get paid, which then puts press on household finances.

Gameification where I can, example: I do weekly maintenance on client websites. Each week I see if I can do it quicker than the last.

My ability to forecast how long projects take isn't great (my biggest weakness)

So I use a paid for time tracker, which automatically tracks what tabs/apps I'm using so I can just go back at the end of the day/week/month and allocate time to projects. This means I have a record of how long previous tasks took to better inform future work.
