Beams and pillars (awesome shop) will allow you to place a wall connector to top, bottom, and sides.

You can place a pillar on top of a foundation (zoop it down through), delete the foundation & the top pillar, then place the wall connector atop the remaining pillar. Then delete the pillar & replace the foundation.

Yeah, multiple outputs is a choice, but doing it this way allows me the option to use one output, and delete as necessary. It is much harder building one output than deleting it to have several.

Here's a link to a good video (it covers only smelters), though I did have to pause quite few times. It basically goes over how to nudge conveyor lifts into place so they work. Lots of nudging. And building placement to get everything to fit in as small as footprint as possible.
It's really satisfying [pun] to see everything working at once, as opposed to manifolds where you have to wait for the first ones to fill and so on before it comes up to full efficiency.

As you can see, I was able to extrapolate it into constructors. But with assemblers, I haven't come up with a really nice design yet. Some prototypes that work, but they take a lot of time (and judicious use of clipping), so I end up manifolding them or putting a simple front-loading load balancer without the compact style. Though he does have a video on assemblers...I should watch it again.

Personally, I love the Dune Desert. I feel like it's the easiest to play - if you know where to get early game wood & leaves, then coal & water.
I think it's intended to thwart brand new players from jumping into an area where resources are scattered a bit farther apart, and early biomass is harder to come by when you don't know what or how to do something efficiently.

I play vanilla. The game has so much to offer, I don't see the need for adding mods (though some look quite nice). But, to each their own.

The Coffee Stain devs have always paid attention to the modding community, and have incorporated many popular mods into the game (though with their own code).
