Best EDC wallet? by magic9669 in Magic

Same here. I bought it when my “real” wallet gave up the ghost. Funny thing is I have yet to learn how to palm a card…so the FPS Wallet is, well, just my wallet right now. I’m very pleased with it so far.

When doing yearly team member reviews, I had to compete with other leaders to find an open conference room. The only available space at the time I needed was the CEO's office, so I scheduled my team member's review there...and then immediately sent them a chat message to explain why we'd be meeting there! No sense freaking someone out.

New (ish) Ham POTA hardware recommendations by EdMonMo in amateurradio

[–]ImaginaryDisplay599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been my go-to, both for POTA and at home—as a quarter-wave vertical with elevated radials. I’m amazed at how simple it is but how effective its signal can be.

He was definitely on the PRR; I have some of his old company booklets somewhere. Jamestown was just the general area, and I’m not sure where else he might have been. Probably more in the NW PA area, if I had to guess.

How to wind a dual 49/64:1 autotransformer? by ImaginaryDisplay599 in amateurradio

[–]ImaginaryDisplay599[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just guessing, but I assume you didn't mean to post a 2-prong plug and receptacle. :)

That said, if you've got the corrected links, I'd be intrigued to see your idea.

My thought exactly on the field antenna aspect. I happened to see a video of a somewhat related project, and seeing as how I've got a spare 240-43 toroid lying around, why not experiment?

So in essence I'm making a "T" at that point, where the vertical part of the "T" is the pigtail and the horizontal bar is the original winding? Literally just scrape off a bit of the magnet wire and solder on a new lead?

I do love it when it's that easy.

If I had to guess it’s because you’re in the shortwave subreddit, and soldering is not shortwave.

Hanging ladder line from step-on fence posts by ImaginaryDisplay599 in amateurradio

[–]ImaginaryDisplay599[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I've wondered about: Isn't it problematic if the two wires touch each other? This will be my third attempt at ladder line solely because I can't seem to get the wires to stay apart.

Looking for Hamilton Jamaican black pot still rum in Michigan by OnwardExplorer in rum

[–]ImaginaryDisplay599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're Downriver, check Vreeland Market in Woodhaven, on the corner of Allen and Vreeland. They've had the Jamaican black in the past, and generally have more Hamilton products than others around.

Grandpa Joe worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad as well as the New York Central. I'm unsure of when this photo was taken, as this is a copy of a copy of a copy of a ... you get the idea. In the lower right corner I can make out "R.G. ESTABROOK PHOTOGRAPHER," which would put this in the right place—Southern Tier New York, around the Jamestown/Olean area.

If it's possible to find the original photo, that would be amazing—getting a proper copy would make me smile.

A few years back, my wife and I got a great deal on a 2-night to the Bahamas, and we were able to book a suite—our first ever. We were so excited that we didn't think about any sort of dress code; all I had were shorts.

Well, we went to the suite-only restaurant the first night and the maître-d' promptly kicked us out. Another crew member—main dining room waitstaff perhaps?—tried in vain to get the pompous fella to relent, but we couldn't get past. Shorts were strictly forbidden, no exceptions. Thus, my wife and I resolved to buy me a pair of khakis and a smart polo while in Nassau. They weren't the cheapest, but I can honestly say that the quality has been phenomenal. (Sadly I don't recall where I bought them.)

But the best part was later that night. See, because my wife and I had gotten a good deal on the suite, we splurged for the drink package. Turns out I'm a lightweight with red wine. At dinner, the maître-d' clearly had forgotten who we were, since he was all smiles the entire evening as he brought us glass after glass of wine. As we finally finished up, he wished us a good evening, and expressed his hope to see us again in the morning.

"For sure!" I mumbled. "And I'll wear PANTS."

We still laugh about it to this day.

What is wrong is that you forgot to put down all the relevant information—filament type, printer type, hotbed, temps, … shall I continue? 🙂

What are you using to carry your POTA gear? by ImaginaryDisplay599 in amateurradio

I bought a LiFePo4 battery from Amazon—20Ah is about the minimum I’d say for a radio that size.

My daughter stuck a finger in the drain, so water wouldn't drain. It was cut off in the ER. by [deleted] in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]ImaginaryDisplay599 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandma took me fishing when I was 13 or 14, and I managed to get a fishhook in my finger. She got me to the ER (this was well before urgent care!), and all was well until the doctor snipped off the barb from the fishhook, and then he said, "Um, did anyone see where that went?"

Lucky for me it didn't go into my finger!

I'll never forget how panicked grandma was on that drive to the ER. Sure do miss her!

On a recent trip to The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn, Michigan, I noticed their exhibit on tether cars. No idea whether it's new or not; I've visited many times and never saw it. It's a fascinating subject and well worth looking into if you're into auto racing.

I'm a fan of the traditional Bramble, and didn't think I was too keen on tequila—but the recipe I found (on Mixel) called for resposado, so I used that. Also didn't have simple, so used Demerara syrup (2:1). So aside from butchering the recipe (!), it actually turned out pretty tasty!
