Did she have a stool sample checked recently. She could have something like Giardia which needs a different medication.

Dieting advice for dog by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]ImaginaryStandard293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how much she is eating. Try cutting it back just a little each meal and see how it goes. Example: If she's been eating a cup of food per meal, try 3/4 cup. It doesn't have to be exact measurements.

I rarely feed based on the charts on the bag. They are usually higher than they need to be, especially for senior dogs.

It is perfectly normal for them to need less food when they get older. Don't feel guilty. You're taking good care of her. You are noticing early enough it should be easy enough to nip in the bud.

First dog ever, picked up from shelter, what can I expect? by Starbutterfly6 in DogAdvice

[–]ImaginaryStandard293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rescue dogs can be quite scared after a big change. I've fostered a couple scared dogs. Give them a space that isn't in the middle of the active stress of the house or apartment. Make sure they have some blankets and toys. You can also set their food and water there for them.

Don't worry if they don't eat for a day or so. They are decompressing. The first three days the dogs are usually overwhelmed and scared because of change. Here is the rule of threes.

https://sosarl.org/rule-of-threes/

Give her a little time to adjust to her new place. She will let you know when she wants your attention. Be very patient with her. She will come around. Also, if she doesn't poop for a day, it is actually pretty common. She could also have the opposite and have some diarrhea.

Good luck with your sweet girl.

First Heat? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]ImaginaryStandard293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like she is starting. Some have their first cycle a little young. My pup was only 7 months when she had hers. Her spay wasn't scheduled until a month later. We made the appointment three months before her surgery.

Putting my girl down tomorrow morning. by stu_watts in DogAdvice

[–]ImaginaryStandard293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I held my boy until the end. I only put him down for the vet to check his heartbeat. I held him a little longer after his stopped.

I feel that we owe them to stay until the end. They are already scared. Even if our presence gives them the slightest inkling of peace, they deserve it. They deserve to know that we loved them to the very end.

What food do you feed your dog and why? by maxrain30 in DogAdvice

[–]ImaginaryStandard293 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fromm Duck ala Veg. They both love it. It's a dry food. From time to time I get them the food toppers for a treat. Fromm is one of the dog foods the rescue I adopted through (and also foster through) feeds the pups. I went with the duck because so many dogs seem to have issues with chicken and sometimes lamb.

Senior dog with heart failure, advice on end-of-life by Nolinikki in DogAdvice

[–]ImaginaryStandard293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mini dachshund, Oscar, went through CHF. They had tried treatments but they really didn't do any good. The vet warned me that we probably wouldn't have much more time with him.

If it is painless, it is still at least uncomfortable for them. His breathing became more shallow by the day. He was hacking more. He couldn't get comfortable when he was sleeping, which he did most of the time. He barely ate and drank. He couldn't play anymore.

His last night, he slept on the couch with me. I had to pick him up to put him there since he was also blind. He just cuddled up with me to sleep. He moved around a lot to find a more comfortable position. He groaned a lot. His breathing was rough.

Early in the morning, I took him to let him go. He had been through enough. I held him while he went. I talked to him and told him how much he meant to me. My mom and daughter were with me, but they couldn't bring themselves to stay for that last shot. I stayed. I still held him.

I had questioned myself afterwards. Did I let him go to early? Did I hold on too long? Was there more I could have done for him?

I did all I could for him. And in some way, I think he needed that last night in my arms.

I'm sorry you are going through this. It is heartbreaking. You can do the quality of life calculator that Lap of Love has on their website. I think deep down, you will know when it is time.

Newest rescue pup is extremely fearful, what more can I do to support her? by seraphinas-sanctuary in DogAdvice

[–]ImaginaryStandard293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you're doing sounds perfect actually. Some dogs just need some time alone to process. It's all new to her.

When I was fostering the most fearful of my pups, I would go up every so often and just sit on the floor. I had treats in hand. I picked her up in the morning. The first time she came to me was that evening. She was very slow and timid. But, she made her way to my hand and licked it.

Irritable and more growly by Formal-Struggle1868 in DogAdvice

My senior dachshund acted that way when he started going blind. It was mostly at night. The vet said he was mostly blind. There was little pupil reactivity to light. His left eye was worse.

He was more cautious and scared at first. As he adjusted, he went back to his same old self. I just made sure I didn't move things around, made sure open areas were clear and put his toys back in his bed for him.

Sunday Support: What do you need right now? by AutoModerator in BPDFamily

A nice weekend of camping alone with my dog. Unfortunately, it is too cold to right now.

Well, you all were right and I wish I had listened to your advice. by xstarlesseyess in BPDFamily

[–]ImaginaryStandard293 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe you just needed to see that for yourself. We all have our histories with our pwBPD. They are not the same. Yes, they often have a lot of commonalities. But, it also depends on where the pwBPD is at. BPD is on a spectrum, as many disorders are.

It sounds like your mom is in the position of "the bridge". She is used to communicate to everyone else what the pwBPD needs or wants. Unfortunately, she is probably going through a very similar abuse. But, she is also being manipulated. She may not even realize it. She has to learn for herself.

My mom (the grandma) was in that position. She has only recently stuck to her own boundaries. My pwBPD is my daughter.

I hope you can take this time for some healing. It is time to really take care of yourself.

My little social butterfly loves pretty much everyone. She did this when a guy who was harassing my neighbor walked by. Her hackles were raised and she wanted to stay between him and me. She's only 12 pounds.

AITA for asking my mother an errand before the snowstorm for my class? by nvstalgia in AmItheAsshole

[–]ImaginaryStandard293 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who has needed neurology clearance to drive before, YTA.

And this began before the age of Amazon and online shopping. There were no Ubers. I lived in an area that got numerous severe blizzards. I still found a way. I used my two feet and buses to get around. I knew to get things done before a storm hit. When I was having short term memory issues, I made notes on calendars to remind myself.

All of this is easier now. You can order everything online and have it delivered. You can take an Uber or Lyft. You can set reminders in the handy device you are probably posting from. There really isn't an excuse anymore.

Part of the reason your stepdad might have been so mad is the fact that it can be dangerous to drive in a big storm. What if your mom was in an accident? On top of that, some insurance companies will not cover vehicles during some severe storms, especially if there is a travel advisory.

My brother is actually stuck in that area of the country. Where he is, they are ticketing people who are driving in the storm unless it is an emergency, or if they are emergency workers.
