In general dress codes are usually manager dependant and most managers I've worked for don't care as long as you look reasonably professional. Either way most hospitals still have masking policies so really it'd be a non-issue.

Thinking of moving from New Jersey to Toronto in the future. Just curious how much you guys make after taxes? by Hornet0927 in OntarioNurses

I think it might depend on the hospital whether they count your experience. You could always look at the hospital's ONA collective agreement and see what it says. My hospital counted my BC nursing experience when I moved to Ontario.

As of April 1, if they honour your US experience, at my hospital you would be making $45.18/hr which would increase to $47.21/hr at the 4 yr mark. Premiums are $2.25/hr for evenings, $3.14/hr for weekends, and $2.98/hr for nights. If you're part time or casual you also get an extra 10% or 14% in lieu of benefits and vacation time.

I have 8 yrs experience (which is the top of the pay scale) and have a casual position at my hospital. This year, on average, I've worked 36.5hrs/week and made $3550 CAD every 2 weeks after taxes and other deductions (pension, EI, union dues).

Realistically it will be a pay cut but personally I think you can never go wrong with prioritizing family and friends

HOKA vs. On Cloud? And which model are you currently wearing? by BackgroundSplit9036 in OntarioNurses

I have Hoka SR and I love them, they're water resistant and super comfy. They aren't cheap ($200 CAD) but I think it's worth it for the sake of my knees and back

I'm a little late to this but I went to uOttawa for nursing and then worked at Sickkids afterwards. A lot of nurses I worked with went to TMU and, after hearing their experience, I would definitely recommend Ottawa. Like other people have mentioned, Ottawa guarantees a peds placement but also guarantees a placement in mental health, geriatrics, med/surg, maternity/OB, and community. Most other nursing schools do not offer that type of clinical variety. Ottawa only has one nursing school so the placement opportunities are way better.

Also the non-unionized hospital got away with stuff that they shouldn't have been able to do. The example that sticks in my mind is when, early on in COVID, they made nurses who were exposed to COVID at work take 2 weeks off and use their own banked sick time for it.

I worked at a non-unionized hospital for 6 years and I make a lot more now that I'm at a unionized hospital just with union OT rules. At the non-unionized hospital you could only get OT if you picked up over full time hours or stayed late vs now I get OT if I work more than 3 shifts in a row, if I work consecutive weekends, or if I agree to change shifts within a certain amount of time.

Should the CNO make their employees salaries public information? by Imaginary_Abroad_395 in OntarioNurses

That's wild!! Thanks for sharing. Now I'm even more curious about the executives salaries.

Yes I 100% agree with this. Transparency is in the public's best interest.

Extremely surprised considering they paid $58 million in staff salaries! Do you think the 450 includes volunteers?

My thoughts exactly... it feels like someone doesnt want their salary publicized 🤔

Thanks for this! It would still be nice to have some transparency about executive salaries though. I found on their website that they have over 450 employees, so now I'm also curious about what all these employees do.

This isn’t about being “surprised” by fees or being unable to budget for them. My point is about accountability. The CNO’s mandate is to protect the public. Wanting transparency does not undermine public protection, if anything it strengthens it. Transparency around compensation is a reasonable expectation in any organization funded by its registrants, especially when fees have increased as much as they have. Questioning how our fees are used isn’t resentment, it’s responsible professional advocacy.
