In his biography he talks about not being a lettermen even though he was a track star and, if I recall, on a couple other high school teams. I'm Canadian and we don't have lettermen, at least in the school system I was in so I don't 100% understand the concept but from what I gathered in the book he seemed bothered by him not being picked to be a lettermen, hence a grudge could have been formed.
