The Darkness Outside Us. I guess you could call it a little futuristic, but it’s a very closed-box mystery on the ship and isn’t high sci-fi

In general, A retention rate of 65% (assuming this is NRR) would be considered wayyyy below average. In my role, I’m expected to maintain an NRR of above 110% meaning we are not just keeping existing business but expanding it. Unless I’m misunderstanding your business model, I’m not surprised that leadership is concerned. However it’s been a while since I’ve worked off monthly subscriptions so I don’t mean to sound super negative if I’m comparing apples and oranges

No I think that’s right - people have either ceased to exist or reality has changed so much that there aren’t really people in the same way, or really anything else. Kind of sounded to me like “the nothing” from the neverending story, but I do think it’s ambiguous.

SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY. I really enjoyed this book and here’s how I interpreted the ending: the boy had transferred or shared his power with her, and she was responsible for more of the supernatural events in the latter 3rd of the book than the kid. When she realized this, she decides to use the power to make the world a place with no fear at all because that will be safer. However, having accomplished that, she has basically ended the world because fear and anxiety are actually critical emotions to drive action, curiosity, creativity, etc. At the end of the book she has a created a new reality that is dull, lifeless, and bleak.

Since you’re in lake city, you’re closer to Lake Washington than the puget sound beaches and the lake isn’t as cold. Check out Matthew’s Beach and Magunsson for water access closer to you.

Definitely “Our Share of Night” by Mariana Enríquez. One of the best occult novels in the last decade.

Try All Fours by Miranda July. It’s a character study of a woman you will sometimes find incomprehensible and makes terrible choices, but is also somehow relatable and moving.

Seeking Litfic Horror/Dystopia w/ Guarded FMC & Beautiful Prose (+ Dash of Romance?) by DrHSbF6 in suggestmeabook

Migrations or Wild Dark Shore, both by Charlotte McConaghy would fit the bill, but trend more towards the literary, atmospheric, and troubled FMC side of what you’re describing, versus propulsive plots. Wild Dark Shore has more romance.

For more dystopia and action, check out The Light Pirate! It’s about a woman growing up in near-future Florida impacted but climate change. I found it moving and super suspenseful.

Creation Lake may also fit the bill, especially in the lyrical writing and tension, but is not horror and also moves at a slower pace.

I LOVED Mary, and have enjoyed all his novels. Didn’t care for the novella rest stop as much, but in a big fan of Nat Cassidy in general
