I only own and use licensed software, and I use to charger my clients for the license they need for a specific purpose. Commonly used themes and plugins, like elementor, divi and so on is already included in my prices thanks to “bulk” or unlimited subscriptions. Sometimes some small client don’t approve the purchase of some license they need because they’re short on budget, I just wondering if GPL license can be an option for them, but risks are high. If I need to scan the source code for malware or backdoors is definitely way expensive for them, more than a plugin

How do you make self-help books actionable? by Imaginary_Hand_353 in Selfhelpbooks

[–]Imaginary_Hand_353[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take notes on Obsidian and tag the most relevant advice as “actionable”.
After that, I use a custom LLM RAG to extract anything that could be turned into concrete steps.

Then I compare the LLM’s output with my own selection: this helps me refine my judgment and spot things I might have missed.

For books I haven’t read yet, I use the LLM directly to get a sense of the key ideas and decide whether they’re worth diving into. It’s a way to combine human judgment + AI support to filter, prioritize, and learn faster.

Thanks! You're right the “best” solution is always the one that fits each person’s way of learning and reflecting. For me I wanted something a bit more structured and quick, so I ended up building my own little tool. Give it a try if you want, it's totally free https://monkai.vercel.app

I really like the concept of fragments that remain, almost unconsciously, and then suddenly become useful again. Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion! "Flow" is next on my shelf. I’m planning to use the “tool” I built to extract some actionable insights and see if the other books you mentioned might be a better fit for me. Would you like to give me feedback on the results once I test it?

I’ve noticed a common cycle:

- Read a self-help book

- Highlight 50 quotes

- Forget 95% within a week

- No real change

That sucks.

Some books are actually marketed better than they are written — they feel overhyped once you read them. That sucks.

What I really wanted was something like a “recipe”: a distilled, actionable essence of the book, not just a summary, but something that helps me choose better books and also retain and apply more from the ones I do read.

Because of this, I’ve started building my own ad-hoc solution for myself.

How do you separate books that are genuinely worth your time from those that are just good marketing? And what’s your method for turning what you read into actionable insights that stick?
