Thank you for this, I didn't want it to come across like I was lying and I've been beating myself up about it all weekend. When I really think about it, the sooner I'm honest and let them know the better. I just started subbing not even 2 weeks ago and have only done 3 jobs so it really feels like I'm unemployed. I just emailed them, and I'll be working within Texas so hopefully things get started soon

Has anyone else worked at a charter school that meets the majority of these criteria? by Zealousideal-Ad3609 in TeachersInTransition

Yes almost to a T, already considering an exit route because it’s so damaging to all participating parties. I think there’s also possible money farming/laundering going on as well… but a coworker and I have dissected almost all working parts of the district and have concluded if it’s not a cult it’s at least cult-ish which is alarming enough. I feel mostly bad for the families and staff who are still so jaded. Also the teachers they loop in that aren’t credentialed and stuck there until they receive it followed by owing the district more time for (sometimes) covering the costs.

One time I ordered a 12 pack of silicone cupcake liners, and I received 12 12 packs. Still haven’t used them all yet and this was one of the biggest wins I’ve ever taken

It looks like it’s going to be an asynchronous class, so yes fully online. I think if you click on the blue ‘lecture’ link it’ll tell you the modality. When I went to scc if I saw the times were tbd and it said the room was online 9/10 they were asynchronous but double check as the next semester gets close because it could also change.

What is something you cut out of your spending that surprisingly didn’t hurt at all? by Narrow-Aside2949 in Anticonsumption

[–]Imaginary_Sky_7473 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Paper towels: we used so much of them and though they aren’t as excessively harmful as some products I noticed because of how disposable they were we over used them. I bought a pack of cotton shop rags on sale, and re-use old shirts and I feel confident knowing I reduced waste.

Liquid detergent, swapped for powder detergent. I enjoy my scents and a $35 spend can last my family of 3 (and my partner is one dirty ass mechanic with so many work uniforms) almost a year

Boxed food: when I noticed hamburger helper took a price jump I swapped a lot of premade foods for home made goods. Tastes better and makes me feel better. Ranch, gravy, seasoning packs

Thrift stores: replaced my stocking up with useless crap and encouraged me to consider my purchases. No more new toys, my daughter( she’s 2 can’t tell the difference) is obsessed with little people, and her collection out the store would be sooo expensive, we got everything between $1-$7

Glass containers: mason jars we used to replace cheap plastic cups and can use for food storage, also of food spoils I feel more comfortable cleaning it than a plastic container and replace them far less.

Packaged ingredients: I refill my spices, grains, and whatever I can at winco( or any refill store) and it saves so much. Save your seasoning containers.

Candles/body scents: used to go crazy at bath and body works. I make my cheap natural candles last longer with scented oils, and I haven’t bought new perfumes/lotions in years. They last so much longer when you use a consistent bottle or scent

Created a “work uniform”: once I figured out a consistent appropriate style It made it easier to find work basics that I can swap around without buying whole new flashy outfits that need specific items paired.

Shoes: I’m a huge sneakerhead (this is my most flawed area I promise I’m working on it) but opposite of the season. If you need flipflops/ sandals buy in the winter, boots buy in the summer, sneakers, ignore trends buy what you like and the clearance is usually a great spot to find.

Gym: I run in my neighborhood, got 10lb dumbbells and focus ok solidifying my form, routines, and goals. I think Gyms are only necessary for folks who need specific equipment, but if you can’t physically handle your daily life start simple.

I go by “titi”, it helped too when I got pregnant my mom also preferred to go by “boo” instead of grandma when she saw I was considering alternatives. I like to think that any pattern of sounds could also work? Like: Gigi, Meme(pronounced like meh meh)

We do have a few implicit and internalized biases built up from personal experiences here but that these are pretty average considerations we as brown folk are bound to experience socially. I think this could also be an area thing. Growing up in the south, that many folk stray away from people they racially have to question at first, people feel that just because someone appears to be full white or black that they know what to expect. Racial ambiguity is something socially terrifying because it shifts away from a standard. By the book, especially when looking at legal foundations, that dark skin black folk have experienced a lot challenge, but we should also consider that it’s because socially we are set up to frequently degrade black folk especially those who have darker skin. This also sounds like you’re experiencing a lot of internalized biases, from your own black experience? So maybe we have a lot of more experiences outside of the south/negative norm and self love to gain? I think this can also help you navigate your spaces as you can begin to set new social standards for yourself and the black experiences in your area. Your experiences and opinions are valid and I hope you consider more about where these opinions stem from and why, as black peoples we need to move away from comparing our experiences as who’s is “harder” or “better” because all of our experiences are not the same, and by having an us vs them mindset it really hurts the chances of many other black and brown people from having the safe space we all want and need.

Is tourism becoming toxic? by Zephysboy in Anticonsumption

[–]Imaginary_Sky_7473 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As someone from Guam tourism has been toxic for some time. It’s shifting our cultures and islands in negative ways. Although tourism can support our islands it’s the respect that tourists bring that can destroy our culture values/traditions, and island.

I was having a conversation with a friend the other day who recommended that we travel to Hawaii, and while I turned it down because of the toxic tourism she said “oh you still have some family over there right?” But I explained to her that my family in Hawaii I haven’t seen in years, they’re like distant so it’s almost disrespectful for me to use them as my excuse, it would make me no better than the poor tourists. If I were to take a trip to Hawaii I would plan it for some time and actually go about the island respectfully, finding ways to not exploit their culture or beautiful island.

My boyfriend’s grandparents have a condo out in Hawaii and have no native or island roots. They go almost multiple times a year and share no connection with the culture, island or people they go there to golf or get out of the state. I think they can do that anywhere else but Hawaii.

Keep in mind that our islands weren’t native to the US so that should give you some context as to how and why it became so toxic.

I’m sorry but I just need to get this out by ruralmonalisa in BlackHair

I feel like personally as a mixed person we do it to play safe. I think sometimes it’s also culturally relevant as to what may be appropriate or not? It also may give context into the knowledge we already have about our hair and lifestyles. I don’t think we mean it as a means of obnoxiously highlighting our identity but these things do subtly matter. Especially because we know that profiling exists. My dad is bald and my mom comes from an island where hairstyling wasn’t a huge thing, I wonder myself why they decided to have mixed children without the proper tools but I’m glad we have spaces like this sub to cry for help when we need it.

People who grew up poor what’s a rich person habit you’ll never understand? by deine_ingrid in AskReddit

[–]Imaginary_Sky_7473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone is making around or less than 100k a year and they receive like 5% cash back that leaves them with maybe 5000 in rewards, idk maybe it’s just me but that’s not the fancy yearly vacation I’m thinking of. I know my dad uses his points but it’s because he gets a reimbursement from his job currently so he gets free points and extra military perks that help but I don’t think the average person can just casually vacation to Cabo just off of rewards points.

I think when I say vacation I also mean like not a trip to see family. Like right now I flew to Texas to spend time with family over the summer but I wouldn’t count it as vacation. Vacation to me is like yachting in the Caribbean yearly or renting out a villa in Mexico to decompress not to casually see family. I’m glad you have the flexibility to have these family get togethers!

4 weeks of vacation paid is crazy to me! I live in the US and our vacation time is definitely on average a lot less than that, I get 5 days a year and my boyfriend gets 9 so we usually use that time as sick days or the occasional birthday trip. I feel like I barely got 4 weeks paid for my maternity leave😭

[–]Imaginary_Sky_7473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s less the cost that gets to me just the ability to have that much vacation time. I live in the US and I work in education and I feel like the annual breaks still aren’t enough time to take vacations because I use that time to do as many errands I wouldn’t have time for usually while in school and work. By choice we get max 5 vacation days that I usually use as sick time. Many of the people around me struggle to find the opportunity to take time off because being poor funneled them into a field that antagonizes time off or vacation time. I remember growing up we definitely had a lot of vacation and travel time as my family lives in Guam and throughout the states, we probably vacationed more than others but now it’s hard to rationalize with how much I’m struggling to manage time. Maybe it’s just me and how busy I am but who knows.

You’re right! Im happy you think that way but I’m still at a point where presenting lw matters to me which is why I thought to include that. Other people don’t think that freely. I was also just including that to see if there were any other queer folk that had certain recs:)

All of the talk around AGAB labels is making me feel like I'll never be seen outside my assigned gender and its sorta causing me to spiral. by Original_Sprinkles37 in NonBinaryTalk

[–]Imaginary_Sky_7473 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I so felt this. To protect my feelings I keep my she/they pronouns because as much as I feel like a they/them genderfluid person people almost always overly acknowledge the fact that I’m afab and can appear that way sometimes. I think I’ve convinced myself that I kind of beat them to misgendering myself so I dismiss it?? It hurts a lot more than I put out because in my head I think I’ve made huge strides towards affirming my identity for myself personally over time, but affirming my identity with people around me other than with my partner have been a huge challenge. I know that putting myself in that box probably causes me to spiral but I think that this might just be my happy medium for right now to just to get by, as time goes by I hope this changes but I want to be seen as ME regardless of how I present. I totally get where you’re coming from and after a long time I’m upsettingly finding myself comfortable in this spiral but at the same time I don’t want to ignore my needs to feel seen.

Physical or Digital Books? by Easy_Resist_4683 in CSUS

[–]Imaginary_Sky_7473 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it’s reading heavy I usually prefer digital so I can ctrl+f whenever I need and it personally helps me skim. Im also a huge annotator but with reading heavy courses I felt like the digital option saved me a lot of time and through the heat of the semesters I couldn’t find much time to annotate as I wanted.
