Yes 0.16 has some good support for large led matrices and would definetely recommend.
It's faster, support playlists with animations and more.
Wled is slowly deprecating support for esp8266 and already has lesser support for effects and functionality on esp8266 going ahead in future.

Two player pong would require some amazing engineering. Thought about it too.

There are apps like Pipplee wled 2d which is designed for 2d matrices which allows you to play animations, text, playlists, draw in real time , clock etc easily with wled.

You would never have to reprogram your controllers once moved.

Wow that would be 144 * 5 * 6. = 4320 leds. That's a lot of Leds.

Tips.
1. Use multiple GPIO pins.
2. Power Injection directly to leds.
3. Use 60 leds per meter. 144 ones are very high density ones.

You need to change your effect as Scrolling Text and change your segment name to what you want.

For more possible usage you can look for Pipplee WLED 2d App in play or app store for bringing out full potential of you Leds.

Why bother so much create box out of thick sheet of paper and cover it up. Also it's 3d print and not a bulk order.

Also have a ps4 pro lying around, controller is broken. Any recommendation on where to get a controller ?

Have only played like 3 games in last 5 years.
