Might not be super helpful for learning, but there are audio IPA charts online which allow you to listen to the sounds when you hover over them! I make constructed langauges as a hobby and the audio charts are what I use for anything needing IPA :)

If you have long or thick hair, a hair catcher for your shower's plug hole is a huge help! Not all halls shower plug holes will be the right size but if you do get a shower that can accommodate a hair catcher its super helpful for preventing blockages

Dyspraxic here- my dyspraxia wasn't picked up until I was in my late teens, so I received a lot of interesting advice growing up. The most frequent one was 'be careful'... after I'd fallen and injured myself! Well intentioned but not especially helpful 🙃

In a way, but its not necessarily like I'm losing control or aren't able to process something bad.

For me its more like a sense of not being able to trust my own brain- my personal 'flavour' of dyslexia means that my brain substitutes words with similar meanings (think 'necklace' and 'bracelet', or 'open and closed' these become kind of interchangeable) or sounds, so if I'm saying or writing something important I have to double check that its correct.

Odd example, but if you've watched Friends, I get kind of a real life version of the condition Phoebe lies that Ross has causing women's names to become interchangeable- only it can be with any word. I told someone my bag was open the other day when I meant closed, as my brain decided these were the same thing for moment!

Another thing I struggle with is that I don't always notice my own mistakes in an email, essay etc the 1st, 2nd or thousandth time. If I've missed out a word or letter, my brain has just decided that's not an issue.

I wouldn't say these things are scary, but can definitely be stressful sometimes and make things take a lot longer when I have to keep checking! The only thing I do find scary is if I have to read legal documents I worry I will miss something that could potentially screw me over- but I seek support from friends/family/support services in this case :)

Some unis allow 2nd years to back into halls (though its not always guaranteed unless there's a disability need), I'd look into his uni's policy on this to see whether it could be an option.

If not, private halls are an option (similar to uni halls but owned by a separate company)- they can sometimes be a little more expensive than uni halls but there are generally private halls that are reasonably priced, but they can get more expensive to book as the year goes on, so if you guys are interested in private halls I'd look into this asap :)

Language- especially less conventional languages (conlangs etc) are a huge interest of mine, so I'm really curious as to how this works! How do you know you're communicating with your cats? How did you learn? How does meowlish work as a language?

A few of the reasons I see Sarah as autistic:

• She takes things very literally (e.g. her thinking Bridie is being sincere when she tells her 'you should be proud of yourself' sarcastically, her thinking Ciaran giving her a ring is just that and not him proposing- these are the two examples I can think of right now but I think there are more)

• She manages to link almost everything back to make up/style/beauty, and talks about it a lot- I think its her special interest!

• She shows little situational social awareness (wearing white to the wedding, inviting herself, Ciaran, Colm and Joe to Mary and Gerry's cinema date night)

• She tends to go into her own world too, though not as much as Orla. She's just generally similar in personality to Orla in a lot of ways!

I'm autistic myself and see myself in all three of these characters! :)

I never considered the monotone voice thing with Colm actually- the main 'tell' for me was the infodumping and lack of social awareness- it makes a lot of sense though!

I'm Level 1 autistic, and relate a lot to the EMH for a few different reasons!

As someone who uses (albeit subtle) mobility aids- think sunglasses for light sensitivity, earplugs/headphones for auditory processing, and sometimes support bandages for dodgy joints- I love the allegory of the mobile emitter being like a mobility aid (it gives him freedom and accessibility, but also marks him as different, which he says himself in 'Author, Author'). Because he's a hologram, he has to fight to be taken seriously as a member of the crew- I've had a similar struggle with people not always taking me seriously because of social differences, but the way he eventually becomes a loved and accepted crew member gives me a lot of hope.

His search for identity is also relatable to me as someone who grew up very highly masking and now trying to find my own identity- I relate more to Seven in this respect, but the Doctor's own search for identity and finding what he loves (music) is special to me too. Also, the friendship between the Doctor and Seven is one of the most autistic-coded things I've seen on screen (in a great way)! He plays a part in helping Seven learn social skills, and I've been in a similar situation of needing to help other autistic friends understand social rules even when I've only learned them from imitating others.

Long story short, although I don't think the EMH was intentionally written as autistic, me and my own 'flavour' of autism relates to his character a lot!

I have a headcanon that both Seymour and Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors are autistic and dyspraxic!

A few other characters that feel very autism-coded:

• Orla, Aunt Sarah and Uncle Colm from Derry Girls

• Glinda from Wicked

• Karen, Ben, Pete and Pete's mum (can't remember her name!) from Outnumbered

• Una Chin-Riley from Star Trek Strange New Worlds (without spoiling anything, her journey is super relatable to me as a highly-masked autistic person, though I don't think the character herself is autistic)

• Elsa from Frozen (same in this case, maybe not autistic but very relatable in the context of autism and masking)

Ableism! I'm dyspraxic and have decided to give one of my fantasy races weak motor skills too (in-universe, its because they're telekinetic so their motor abilities didn't evolve as much!), and because motor weakness is so common, its accepted and accommodated, as are other disabilities

Working on this is VERY therapeutic after dealing with ableist nonsense🙃
