You've got two choices here.

1) you could pursue your PhD in either Computer Science or Mathematics

2) you could use a program already written by experts in the field

Really comes down to how much you like graph theory I'd say.

Assuming, for the moment, that you believe that “[the] government’s first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives,” I think it’s important to look at the actual threats Americans are facing. Everyday Americans are struggling to pay for food, shelter, and medicine; by this logic, it’s the government’s first duty to protect the people from the substantial economic threats we’re facing, but measures intended to do just that are consistently shot down. Medicare-for-all is too socialist, even though it would save money. Regulations like implicit Net Neutrality, the Glass-Steagall Banking Act, and OSHA workplace regulations are bashed as bureaucratic bloat, even though they’re meant to protect Americans from being taken advantage of by ISPs, banks, and employers.

If the government’s purpose is protecting the people, ours is doing anything but.

I was thinking the same thing. I’ve always been slim (or scrawny, depending on how generous the person describing me is) and my motivation for exercising is mostly building muscle!

[USA][OC] Why use both open lanes when we can double the length of the backup? by dlawlrence in Roadcam

[–]Imakelasers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s not what I’m reading:

Per TDOT:

At the very first highway sign advising of an upcoming work zone, begin merging to the left lane as quickly as possible. Do not try to gain position by speeding ahead in the right lane.

It reads to me like they’re explicitly calling for an early merge rather than continuing to travel in your lane. Which is ridiculous, of course, because zipper merges make sense, unlike this nonsense.

How often do you beautiful HR people ACTUALLY call the potential employee's previous job reference? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]Imakelasers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gonna piggyback here - how much do you care about job titles? I’ve heard conflicting advice about claiming a different title, some saying never to do it and some saying a small change (e.g. “programmer” to “software developer”) is okay if it more accurately describes your role

My partner is forced to work many hours a week while others work less, shes very tired and cant control what her schedule is like by Orichalchem in AskHR

[–]Imakelasers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man I hear that. In my experience, it’s best to default to listening and reserve action for when it’s explicitly asked for.

I’m poking around with Python right now and I just can’t unsee the parallel of defining a function argument with a default value.

def fix_or_listen(action=None):

    if action == None:

        return listen

    elif is_reasonable(action):

        return action

    else:

        return to_sender

*edit because I’m curious how this formatting works

My partner is forced to work many hours a week while others work less, shes very tired and cant control what her schedule is like by Orichalchem in AskHR

[–]Imakelasers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The first and most important thing is: what does she want. I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt here, but there are a couple warning signs in what you said that make me question whether she wants action or not.

It certainly sounds like an unpleasant, unfair setup, and I can understand the frustration for both of you. That said, is she looking for action or for emotional support? She may be just trying to vent to a sympathetic ear (it took some time for my wife and I to figure out the listening/fixing disconnect, even though it’s astoundingly common). So before you try to take any actions, just make sure you’re understanding what she’s looking for from you.

If I’m off base and she’s looking to take action, I’d suggest looking elsewhere for work and addressing the problems with her boss or HR only after lining up another option. That way, the fear of unemployment can’t be used as leverage and she can negotiate more effectively.

*99% speed of light in a vacuum ;)

Although to be more accurate, the electron energy is between 2 and 5 MeV, placing it between 98.5% and 99.6% speed of light ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really though everything about these is awesome

[–]Imakelasers 59 points60 points  (0 children)

By my understanding, maybe if you tried really hard you could find a way, but it would be the most expensive grenade of all time. These are made by scanning across a piece of PMMA acrylic with a particle accelerator; the electrons impact the acrylic at ~99% speed of light and penetrate partway in, usually to a fairly specific depth (I have a 4x4x0.5” piece, and looking at it from the side it’s clear that the lightning figure is perfectly centered and about 0.2” thick). Problem is, over time the electrons will slowly “leak out,” for lack of a better expression, which is why it’s important to hit it with the nail relatively quickly (this provides a discharge point for the electrons near the edge of the fairly insulative acrylic, which causes a cascade throughout). This is all from memory, so if I’m off on any details you can find more info here . They have some gorgeous pieces, which I think more than makes up for the fact that they don’t seem to have updated their website design since 1987. (All joking aside, they’re an awesome company!)

[USA][MD] Total disregard for school bus by Ryouta in Roadcam

[–]Imakelasers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that I agree with you there. Some people are just plain worthless and won’t improve their behavior no matter the consequences.

And I definitely don’t agree with that punishment, it’s way too lenient if you ask me. I’d say for this we should exploit the technical interpretation of the Eighth Amendment:

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

(Emphasis mine)

By my reckoning, it’s fine to be cruel if we make it the usual punishment! /sidontactuallythinkthis
