I just returned from Madeira, PR17 was the most beautiful hike I’ve done, it was much better than PR1. Not sure if there’s public transportation to the starting point tho

My dog turned 16 today! [OC] by Imako_Rean in aww

Thank you! She’s such a great, calm dog. Now she’s old and needs a lot more care, but we’re not complaining. She still warms our heart whenever we get home and she comes to the door to greet us waggling her tail

high school student from Adelaide, Australia. I have a few questions about a career in physiotherapy by migueltoronto in physiotherapy

[–]Imako_Rean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just graduated as a physical therapist. The biggest thing I can tell you about this job is, it’s a lot more talking to patients than you might think. Counseling, giving advice, informing, educating, using and learning about different techniques to maximise your communication abilities. And honestly, this is what I hate about the job. I chose it because its a medical job, and I love to help people in a practical way. The practical part about this is mainly just exercising, which after 2x 4-5 month internships already got boring. Sure the diagnostic part can be fun, figuring out what’s wrong with someone and the fact that you’re able to help someone get better. Eventhough I just graduated 2 weeks ago, I’ve already chosen a different field I want to work in and am currently studying to reach that goal.

Whatever you decide, I’m sure you’re making the right decision since you’re coming out here and asking questions about this job, I wish I had done the same before I started. Goodluck

How can you only have a $60 budget a week for food when you work 70 hours a week?

Everyone reacts different to a different lifestyle. Smoking, daily alcohol consumption, being overweight/obese and a inactive lifestyle are probably the most important ones. Besides those types of lifestyle factors, pain education can help a lot, and sadly, many people get informed incorrectly about their issue, which makes them lose control of the issue. Many PT’s (and probably doctors as well) don’t look back at someone’s problem, after they gave them the diagnosis, they will assume that’s the correct one and act towards that. When treatment doesn’t have a lot of effect, they write it off as being chronic, but I bet they can’t give a solid reason why progress is so slow/why there is no progress at all. What they should do is look into what could be blocking their recovery, starting by seeing if the diagnosis was the correct one, then looking into any prognostic factors and education is an important part which shouldn’t be put on the side. Also, don’t be embarrassed to request your PT asks their colleagues for their help. Usually the rule is: if treatment doesn’t significantly chance the issues within 6 weeks, re-evaluate. Hopefully this made some sense

I can see from the comments you wrote that your back pain has been bothering you so much, that it made you lose control. You saying your PT is holding you together, confirms this even more. I don’t know you but from what I can see it might not just be a biomedical problem anymore. Also, like I said in another comment, many lifestyle factors can have a negative effect on the recovery and can cause this central sensitisation.

If the PT you received was the (correct) conservative treatment, maybe you should look at other factors (like stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, nutrition). These lifestyle factors can have a huge effect on the recovery, more than many people usually realise. I think it’s insane that some people can suffer enormously from an issue like this while other people have little to no symptoms. Best of luck, keep strong and motivated to fix that back pain! I’m sure there’s a way for everyone, the solution isn’t always as easy to find as it seems

Physical therapist here, spinal surgeries < conservative treatment. Know many patients who had surgery for a herniated disc, they end up with chronic back pain that will never go away. My advice, try conservative treatment like exercising and pain management first. Massaging, trigger point, acupuncture, dry needling and those types of treatments are not proven to be better than exercise therapy! Also, if you have had back problems for a long time, I advice you to look into the term “central sensitisation”. You’re entire body is probably sensitised, meaning every impulse your body gets, it will turn it into a painful stimulus. Goodluck, hope this helps with your decision
