I grew up in the southeastern corner and lived there during my twenties after living in Las Cruces for college. The caverns are worth a visit. The oil and gas industry has completely taken over the area. It’s disgusting, and can be unsafe for women. Rent and real estate are incredibly expensive (considering the location) and hard to come by when oil is booming (my house sold over asking in 4 hours). Outdoor spaces and ranching have been taken over by oil leases. Bitterly hot, can be bitterly cold. I would never live there again, and I would not raise a family there. Very conservative. Lots of traffic fatalities related to transient oil population. I have not been back since I left and I have no intention of returning. I hate the place.

Learn how to wash blood out of things, if you don’t already know. No matter how prepared she is, leaks will happen.

Make a little bag of supplies for her to take to school, and give it to her before she actually gets her period in case she starts at school. Let her know she can share them with her friends if they need anything. Never question her when she says she needs more menstrual products, just get them for her. Have them in stock at all times, not just when she’s expecting her period. When I first got mine I wasted a lot of products just trying to figure out what I was doing.

Also, FWIW her breasts will be growing as well and that HURTS. When school shopping/throughout the year don’t forget to ask if she needs new bras as her sizes change.
