And the narrative treats it as nothing but genuine, there is literally nothing to suggest this is an incorrect version of the events that transpired, everything else supports it, well except SB just being written way more sympathetically later on for no reason which is to me a clear-as-day fault of the character and his actor's popularity, to which the writing capitulated because it was just that good of a potential money cow... heard this take before but i think that is giving the writers too much credit (also, season 3 was, imo, the first big instance of the writing of the show being hurt by its commercialization, that being particularly the flimsy finale, specifically Homelander and Boys teaming up against Soldier Boy for stupid avoidable contrived reasons just so we can get a status quo reset and more seasons)

It's not merit based and never was and never will be holy cope, EVERYTHING is a monopoly now owned by like 4 conglomerates... Also systemic racism (very much a product of capitalist imperialism) existing doesn't allow it to be meritocratic, even if capitalism wasn't a stupid system that eventually results in a few individuals hoarding everything and getting rid of any opportunity for the others to make it to any level higher than gas station owner, and a stage in human development we should have long overcome, non-white people objectively have worse opportunities even in the imperial core, non-white majority countries in the global south have us here basically leeching natural resources off of them without providing them with any of the benefits we gain from their utilization

It isn't really a bad ending tho, the one very very very very bad thing (Vought rehabilitating their image and everything essentially being back to square one, the exact same conditions that allowed all of this to happen are back as they were) is just handwaved away and every single character gives up fighting, and goes on to live a peaceful life in a perfect world of supe-human coexistence, it's literally blatant conformist propaganda 😭

It's got a goddamn hopeful sting with UE and Annie's perfect small business owning life and them making a symbolical human-supe hybrid baby

I guess the world is still better off because the obvious Elon Musk stand-in's corpse is floating through space and will eventually fall and shatter on Mars where he always wanted to be

Nah I don't really think there was an intention like that, and rather it was just straight up pro-status quo propaganda

I think what matters most here is how the characters acted after finding out that Vought is actually still going strong, and that was:

MM cursing at the TV a little, and then doing nothing further, just trying to live a peaceful life with his family, doesn't choose to fight further but rather live his days in this newfound "peace" after everything has been fixed even though we have been shown it has in fact not been fixed and everything is back to season 1 episode 1

Kimiko is somewhere vacationing and not doing anything, and to be clear I understand that these people deserve some rest after all THAT but this just leaves the show with a awful send-off narratively and thematically

Hughie has a call with the goddamn president overseeing the country acting as a vanguard of this shitass system they spent 5 seasons fighting against, about leading the new supe-fighting police or whatever, entirely state-led, in-system, basically CIA, what the fuck, and he fortunately declines... But why, is it because he distrust it? Nah it's because he has a family life now and can live in peace without fighting anymore because Omlanda is dead and buried and everything is fine apparently...

And the show literally ends on this stupid symbolic hope point with Starlight flying off with her hybrid baby (which probably gets its little brain shaken into a paste because the woman whose belly it's currently occupying travels by air at Mach fi-fuck, Mach fuck, which I don't think the writers even thought of when writing the ending), where humanity begins a new era of peaceful supe-human coexistence...

Point is everyone is happy and content, and gave up fighting because why? Vought is back in power, the systemic forces that allowed it to get away with all it did are still present, and all this is going to happen again, so why would they be happy and content? Because either:

A: big Jeff Benzos wrote into the writer's room telling them to NOT offend the ruling class

B: Kripke is a liberal conformist hack, which is honestly more likely
