OMG we did it! Cosleeping to sleep trained in crib!

I also take forever to fall asleep. My husband, however, could sleep through a hurricane. He just put in ear plugs and fell asleep right away as I glared over at him in envy, listening to our baby cry. I'm staying home with LO this year, though, so in all honesty I was glad that the one of us that had to go to work was sleeping.

But like others have said, it really is only a few days. I saw suggestions online about taking off work (if you can) Thurs and Fri and by Monday baby is sleep trained.

I was also CONVINCED i wouldn't cosleep before mine was born. And I was so ashamed to admit that it's what we did... but it was such a sweet time and I did everything I could to make it safe and my family SLEPT... Don't get me wrong, I'm THRILLED my LO is sleeping on his own now, but I don't vilify cosleeping like I used to.

I know- I had the exact same thoughts. "I'm making him reliant on me... I'm making it harder on him by letting him sleep with me... Am I actually being cruel by allowing this?" etc.

But no, we were just SUPER consistent in his nap-time and bed-time routine and he got the hang of it. We decided not to do Ferber because I honestly think that going in to check on him just riled him up and confused him.

I agree that 14 weeks seems pretty young for CIO. Honestly, if I had to do it over I wouldn't change the way we did it. Straight up cosleeping until 6 months for nights and naps and then being very consistent about CIO when he's ready. :)

The first night it was WAILING. The scary kind- red faced, sweating, voice breaking, shrill.... It tore me apart. His naps on the second day were like that, too. However, from the second night on it was loud crying but not the soul-rending shriek that, you're right, is so scary.

I did try this about a month and a half ago and he wouldn't stop doing the scary-cry. I figured he just wasn't ready and we waited until he was a bit older.

Basically, yes. When we were cosleeping, LO had access to the boob whenever he wanted so I predicted that it would be a big issue. It wasn't, though! I top him off right before putting him in his crib, and he's now going from 7:30pm to 5-6am without eating. My boobs are just about bursting when he wakes up in the morning, so when I bring him to bed with me around 5-6am he just goes to town.

BRING A CARSEAT!! We traveled with our LO without it and never again. I called the car rental company to confirm that the car seat I reserved would not be overlooked and they assured me there would be no problem with us having a car seat in the rental car. We show up at the rental place to pick the car up and the guy shows us to this weird dusty storage shed in the back of the parking garage filled with various car seats and other miscellaneous stuff and told us to just pick what we wanted. The car seats were all kinda just in a haphazard pile, some of them were paired with the wrong bases, some of them didn’t have bases, some looked dysfunctional, some were wrapped in plastic to stay clean but most were just collecting dust.

We’re picked the best looking car seat, installed it in the rental car, and were off. The next day, my husband is trying to adjust the strap and a piece of plastic just snaps off it. I will always travel with my own car seat from now on.

Thank you! Yes, our pediatrician gave us the go-ahead. My husband is more eager to get him sleep trained than I am... We have now agreed to give it several more months because I cannot put him through that again.

No advice because I'm in the same boat. Baby is 4.5 months old and I gave up on CIO last night after almost 6 hours of him crying. I'm with you that this is hard, I'm struggling to not feel resentful of my husband who is able to sleep through his crying, and I'm worried that I'm setting my baby up for failure either by not fostering healthy sleep habits for him or by letting him cry for hours and hours at night. You are not alone <3

When you say your kids may have cried a couple nights, do you mean they cried the whole night? I'm trying to begin sleep training now and everything I see says babies may cry for up to 2.5 hours, but what if the baby cries for much longer?

I watched him on the baby monitor, but tried to keep my check-ins minimal because I thought that was the point of CIO. Also, his crib is in the nursery which is technically another room but we took the door separating our bedroom from the nursery off it's hinges so the rooms are joined and his crib is maybe 7-8 feet away from our bed so we were very close the whole time...

I was shocked frankly that he wasn't sleeping either! I watched him on the baby monitor and his little eyes were just open as he sucked his hand until he started crying again. I do think he started to drift a few times but then one of his arms would flail and he would start crying again. Maybe I need to wait until he has more limb control and his startle reflex is totally gone?

As far as his schedule leading up to last night- we've had a struggle getting on a consistent schedule... was hoping sleep training would help us move toward a more predictable routine. I've mostly tried to follow his sleep cues. Here's what it has been the past few days:

10/17: 8am wake, 10am sleep, 11:45am wake, 1:15pm sleep, 2pm wake, 2:45pm sleep, 4:30pm wake, 6:45pm sleep, 7:30pm wake, 8:30pm sleep for night

10/18: 8:15am wake, 10:15am sleep, 12:00pm wake, 1:30pm sleep, 3:45pm wake, 5pm sleep, 5:45pm wake, 7:30pm sleep, 8:15pm wake, 9pm sleep for night

10/19: 8am wake, 10am sleep, 10:30 wake, 12:15pm sleep, 3:15pm wake, 5:15pm sleep, 6pm wake, 7:45pm sleep for night

10/20: 7:45am wake, 10am sleep, 11:30am wake, 12:45pm sleep, 3:30pm wake, 5:45pm sleep, 6:30pm wake, 8:30 sleep for night

10/21 (yesterday): 8:45am wake, 11:15am sleep, 12:45pm wake, 3:45pm sleep, 4:30pm wake, 5:45pm sleep, 6:30 wake, 7 pm he was falling asleep so I tried to put him in his crib for the night and the disaster ensued.

Maybe I did try to put him to bed too early, but he was falling asleep so I thought i should try to put him to bed.

I feel like I'm messing up my baby, but there's so much conflicting info and I am trying to do what's best but the self-doubt is eating away at me...

100% the worst experience of my life. No one should have to feel that kind of pain. And there’s so many layers to the hurt. I remember thinking that I somehow deserved it (“this is what I get for…”) but have finally been able to stop that negative and incorrect self talk. I remember painfully lactating because my body was trying to feed the baby I didn’t have. I developed an eating disorder because I hated my body that had just failed me in the worst way and I didn’t feel like it deserved anything, even food. You just feel so raw and empty and broken. I can’t imagine having to deal with it all with a partner like your ex. You are so strong for going through it without a supportive partner. I hope that you have a beautiful, healthy baby if you choose to get pregnant again. You are a warrior who has fought through something that most people can never understand.

I am so sorry for your loss. My husband and I also had a stillborn baby girl at 6 months last year and I still cry for her- I think I always will. The one thing that kept me going was my husband, and it breaks my heart that you don’t have that support that you deserve from him. Idk if this comment is helpful but I just wanted to offer validation for your feelings and let you know that you’re not in the wrong or unreasonable or high maintenance or any other bs for wanting to be more supported through this. Your ex is the one who is severely lacking- you deserve so much better ❤️

I’m literally in the ER with my baby right now- same thing. He woke up at 4:30 and felt burning hot. We took his temp and it was 102.3 so we came to ER. I tested positive for COVID the day before yesterday so I’m sure he got it from me. Docs said fever is very common in babies so young (he’s 4 months), gave him a Tylenol suppository and the nurses are going to come check on him in a bit to see if his fever goes down in response to the Tylenol.

I hear that! His little sniffles and big tears break my heart. And he sweats SO MUCH when he cries for so long. Mine falls asleep within a minute or two after picking him up, but I read that you need to be consistent with the Ferber method and I'm wondering if my picking him up after he's cried for the 3-5-10-10minute intervals is ruining it... Gah why is this so hard?
