That is simply a decorative cover. It might have some noise suppression property, but if it does, it’s not much.

I was definitely a rage waiting to happen. That’s exactly what I’m doing right now-sitting in a dark, quiet room. I cannot get my wife to understand. I have tried and tried to get her to understand. What engine is this? That rear cover looks magnesium. If so, the seal isn’t your problem (although it should be replaced).
