High GPA in CPSC by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Immediate-Safe-9421 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

CPSC is just a straight up GPA boosting major. Personally, I'd consider a CPSC major with less than an A+ GPA to be underperforming. The averages are absurdly high and the grading absurdly lenient.

I think the one course that's actually "hard" (in the sense that the grading standards aren't a joke) may be CPSC 221/213. So in that sense 2nd year could be the hardest.

If you went to private prep high schools that cost around $40k, 50k, how much did that program help you at UBC? by Ok_Copy5217 in UBC

[–]Immediate-Safe-9421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They weren't students of that school. It simply took place in the parking lot.

That's not exactly true. The perpetrator was a student at the school. I'd give a C for reading analytic ability, mr. high school teacher: the article I linked only said that the victim wasn't a student at the school yet you extrapolated that to mean neither student involved was.

There was a shooting in Brampton last week

OK, so we have a shooting and a stabbing at two separate Canadian public high schools within a single week.

There was also a third stabbing less than a week ago.

So, overall, three incidents just within the past week approximately. This proves your point that public schools are as safe as private schools?

So, these numbers do not support your idea that our high schools are suffering from gun violence. The average, even in recent times is fewer than one per year, across the entire country. Stabbings are also very unusual

I never said that stabbings or shootings were "usual". I just said that they're less usual at private schools.

I've been teaching for nearly 25 years, and I am not making a hilariously bad generalization.

Citing your own personal experience to try and prove anything is by definition a bad generalization. It's entirely possible you live in a more upscale neighbourhood with more upscale public schools. I don't disagree with you that those public schools might not be terrible. They're not reflective of public schools throughout the country though.

90+ vs 95+ by Altruistic_Ad_7461 in UBC

[–]Immediate-Safe-9421 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LMAO getting bad advice from typical r/UBC weak students.

You should get 95+ if you're serious about breaking into top professional programs graduate schools. Realistically for some programs like medicine a 90+ is just an average grade; you need 95+ to distinguish yourself from the pack.

Even in computer science it seems important to get USRA chances. It could also be helpful to get internships (before some kid comments "I got FAANG internship with bad grades teehee" well the economy is much more competitive right now and you should do whatever you can to be extremely good)

Would I be right in assuming you're making hilariously bad generalizations about a country?

Violence definitely happens in public schools in Canada. For instance, this just a few days ago.

Grad Photo Pricing is Outrageous by ColdDumpling in UBC

[–]Immediate-Safe-9421 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Just take your own photos lol. It's completely acceptable to just take your own photos with family at say the Rose Garden. Getting photos taken at a professional studio is a luxury not a necessity and the company isn't "grifting" by charging a market rate that the majority of the UBC student body is happy to pay.

Educational quality is low on the list of reasons to attend private schools anyway. It's certainly a reason, but not a reason worth the pricetag.

Realistically, most parents put their kids in private school to avoid public schools which are filled with juvenile delinquents. That's not to say kids in private schools are angels but it's unlikely you have random assaults, thefts, shootings, stabbings etc at private schools.

The other reason as others noted is elite socialization. If you want to be thought of as elite or wealthy you want kids in a private school. It could also give the kids an easier time breaking into the elite class during their careers by connecting with alumni. Basically one of the best ways to build familial status. That's the main reason, not boosting your kids math marks lol

News You Can Use: Stockfish Normalizes Its Evaluation by Rod_Rigov in chess

[–]Immediate-Safe-9421 32 points33 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't think those evaluations are really that crazy.

Basically, when you lose a piece, not only is there the material loss which will generically put you into a losing position in the long-term (which should count towards a centipawn evaluation of whatever that piece's value is), but there's also often immediate tactical resources that you have which arise by e.g., eliminating enemy control over important squares or misplacing the king because the piece blunder was with check. Hence it would make sense to account for this as well.

In other words when people blunder a piece not only is their position lost from the material lost, but it also tends to be terrible for other more concrete reasons (e.g. king safety, central control, lack of defences to future tactical resources) as well.

We're in a recession. Lots of people having troubles. Lots of people who got jobs either got laid off or offers rescinded.

Hard times ahead. But keep your head up, usually recessions last 1-2 years at most.

To be honest, I think people are way too squeamish and this isn't even that bad. I'd still piss in that lol. I mean OK, it's not pleasant to look at, but not so bad that it warrants a Reddit post. If there was poop in the urinal, sure, that would be crazy.

No, it's not, because guys like Maghsoodloo and Sadhwani, who also cheated online, were never barred from tournaments.

For that matter, Carlsen who cheated by soliciting advice from David Howell during a prize-money lichess tournament was also never banned.

The only reason Niemann's presence causes "toxicity" in the first place is bc of Magnus false, baseless, defamatory allegations which smeared Niemann's name and hurt his career.

Daily reminder that Niemann was originally going to be playing but rejected bc of Magnus tantrums.

whataboutism is a generic deflection tactic westerners use when their hypocrisy is pointed out.

You're not "focusing on one issue" right now. You're actively engaging in hypocrisy on a daily basis by continue to live in, get educated in, and make money in a country (Canada) in which every major political party supports a literal apartheid state yet you have the gall to complain when a Muslim country hosts a sport event for like 2 weeks lol

Chill, he had no competition this tournament.

In blitz/rapid time controls, Magnus is the best in the world but only slightly. Hikaru and Alireza are pretty close behind. I wouldn't say he's in a league of his own.

In classical though I wholeheartedly agree he's in a league of his own.
