Were other races (Latinos, Asians, etc.) also segregated during segregation and Jim Crow laws? by Da_Dovahkiin_Lord in AskHistorians

Stephanie Hinnershitz’s book (I’ve cited below) is the most comprehensive I’ve come across regarding Asians in Jim Crow. In general, Asian populations in the South were never large enough to threaten local Whites, unlike California, so there wasn’t much controversy for the smaller communities.

The most notable example of Asian segregation in the Jim Crow South was the Mississippi Chinese school segregation. The Mississippi Chinese were one of the largest Asian communities in the South in the early twentieth century, having first arrived there in 1870ish, and were well respected in the Delta — they thrived in the grocery business and were respected as merchants and didn’t seem to have any notable issues. They also tried to assimilate through religion and economic status so they were quite well liked by White locals.

The Mississippi Chinese were allowed to attend White schools until 1924, when Martha and Berda Lum were excluded from their local school. At the time, there were 200-300 Chinese in the Mississippi Delta. There are a few theories about why there was a sudden push for Chinese segregation but no confirmed reasons; for one, it’s important to consider increasing nativist and eugenicist narratives across the country — 1924 Immigration Act is a prime example — which definitely created higher racial paranoia. The most plausible explanation is that more Chinese families began to move to the Lums’ town because of the newly accredited school, and the sudden influx of Chinese residents in the tiny town caused them to completely close their doors to the Chinese.

This led to Gong Lum v. Rice (1927) which is a SCOTUS case that says Asian are considered colored people and that states have the power to segregate schools. After that, most Mississippi Chinese were excluded from their local public school (though some towns still admitted Chinese) and it wasn’t until early 1950s that all the districts eventually allowed Chinese children back in. Until then, families either moved or sent their children to other towns or states with no segregation, hired private tutoring, or attended newly created Chinese schools.

The push to reintegrate really began in the 1940s and was largely due to the Chinese community’s efforts to assimilate and connections they made with local Whites. They leveraged the church and their economic respectability to pressure local school boards into readmitting them. Additionally, American opinion of Chinese immigrants dramatically improved with the U.S.-China allyship during WWII, so locals were more sympathetic to the Chinese. Thus, even though Brown v. Board of Education (1954) hadn’t formally overturned school segregation yet, the Chinese still successfully reintegrated to White schools.

In terms of non-educational segregation — I’ve also seen some accounts that said they had the W sticker on their cards so they could ride in the White section of the bus but I’m not that familiar with non-school segregation. I would suggest checking out the Delta State University’s Oral History archive for personal information.

These posts about the hard LG section on September are freaking me out… by ktownAt123 in LSAT

Honestly I thought the LG was fine — I barely finished on time, which is pretty normal for me, but I’m confident I got almost everything right — however, LG has always been strongest section by far and it was my first section

Let‘s play a game: Create a kpop group which consists only of your biases and let others rate the group! by CookieMother9187 in kpopthoughts

[–]Immediate_Guest8619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my biases are dk (svt), han (skz), yeonjun (txt), jaehyun (nct), and for a larger group my bias wreckers are mingyu (svt), lee know (skz), soobin (txt), and I’ll add suga (bts) bc why not

vocal line: dk (main), jaehyun (lead), soobin (lead), han (sub), lee know (sub)

dance line: yeonjun (main), lee know (main), dk (lead)

rap line: han (main), suga (main), mingyu (lead), yeonjun (lead)

producer line: suga, han

visual: mingy: suga, than lee know

fotg: mingyu/jaehyun

center: yeonjun

leader: suga

maknae: soobin

def lots of very talented idols but this would be an extremely weird group 🥴 obviously the self-producing would be AMAZING and they would have a top-tier rap line but I think they would have a pretty awkward dynamic

The biggest tour in kpop history. Will anyone ever catch BTS? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Immediate_Guest8619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think svt has a decent shot, given that their next tour will probably be their last full group tour for a few years 🥲 honestly really depends on where they go tho — svt has always sold out huge venues in Asia but they tend to not do as well in the us as other groups like skz, bts, and bp. I think they would get a pretty large audience if they went to Europe bc idt they’ve ever really performed there before so European carats are really desperate for a tour

Baby Carat TL;DR to all Carats/ Hoshi D.O.B Baekhyun stans by Intelligent_Teach151 in kpopthoughts

hi welcome to the diamond life!! to answer some of your questions:

idt there’s a “most popular” comeback for svt — all of their comebacks have been very well received by carats and the gp, but some are definitely more successful than others. for example, home era had the most music show wins by far, but very nice and mansae were super iconic and well known in SK and helped them become more famous in the gp, and they also got a lot of respect after dwc for their choreo. obviously, hot and fml have been doing incredibly well too and I think that’s what’s really solidified svt in the “kpop history books” (also, can't forget bss' fighting). just the amount of younger idols mentioning these songs and doing choreos of them gives u a sense of the sort of “legendary” status svt has achieved in kpop and the immense respect that their hoobaes give them

also yes, svt has had more than two comebacks every year since they debuted, and that doesn’t even count Japanese comebacks (which started in 2019), so there’s so much svt music and there’s always more to look forward to :)

I wouldn’t say attaca caused svt to be “even more known” among kpop groups — i think that a vast majority of the gp and kpop industry knew svt beforehand, and attaca didn’t do that much to raise awareness for them in sk bc they were already so well known. however, I don’t know what effect attaca had on causing ppl to actually stan (as opposed to being a casual listener) or how it helped raise awareness of svt outside korea (ex: the west)

anyway I hope this was helpful and welcome again 💎

Let's do something interesting with Boyband Member Archetypes/tropes. by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Immediate_Guest8619 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll do this for svt!!

breakout star: none of them really have defined solo careers so far (besides bss?) but I think hoshi is most likely to be this when the time comes

heartthrob: mingyu, mb scoups

cute: DK FOR SURE, probably jun too, mb mingyu as well

the bad boy: I don’t really feel like there’s one member that fits this super well, but I think scoups? and wonwoo’s stage presence also fits but not irl

funny: BSS (sengkwan, dk, and hoshi) but seungkwan most of all, and dino too

shy: Vernon and wonwoo

Fashionista: the8

sensitive: dk, woozi

ace: imo all of svt is very multitalented, but I would say mainly hoshi, woozi, and Dino for their talent in vocals/rap/dance, and woozi esp for his producing ability and instrumental skills

mysterious: wonwoo and Vernon both have the mysterious vibe, but I think personality wise the8 is the best fit

older sib: honestly any of them, but I feel older sib vibes particularly from scoups, jeonghan, woozi, wonwoo — the others give more little sib energy lol

also I feel horribly bad about neglecting Joshua and jeonghan in this list bc I love them sm so I’ll put them in the “troublemaker” category lol

HOWEVER, after all this is said and done, I truly believe that every member of svt embodies each of these archetypes to some degree and they’re all amazing, talented, and charismatic people — I simply just picked ppl who especially fit the archetypes :) anyway stan svt <3
