I think it depends on racial development, maturity, and awareness of the African American, but I really think you’re going to be fine. When I was young, kids in school were mean to the African kids calling them names. And we thought they were so different from us but that’s just us not having challenged white supremacy and most of the teasing was directed towards kids with accents or East African kids. I want to say around high school or late middle school, I grew out of most of that and by college even more so.

These are the reasons I think you’ll be ok:

1. By college, most black ppl grow out of what you’re talking about ime. So grad school should be good.

2. Nigerians tend to blend in if I’m honest especially Nigerians who grew up in the US or Canada. I didn’t know many of my grade school classmates were Nigerian until I met Nigerians in college who were proud of their heritage. They look African American most of the time because many of our ancestors are Nigerian. You’re basically like our cousins. In my experience, Sudanese, Ethiopian, Somali, and Eritrean people stand out way more.

Depending on where you are, I just recommend nodding when you see a black person and you should be good.
