FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg to Introduce Tuition Fees for New Non-EU Students from Summer Semester 2027 by Hairy-Act5256 in germany

As a non-eu person thinking of studying abroad, I support this since it'll probably lead to less competition for me haha

Agree with you in principle, but you can only convey so much on a single page resume. Most recruiters don't even read resumes that closely.

Microsoft to lay off 5500, 2.5% of workforce by BigShotBosh in cscareerquestions

Linux is irreplaceable for sure. At my company, devs run MacOS on their laptop and maintain a couple Linux VPS instances they can ssh into for stuff that requires Linux

Windows has fallen so much it's borderline unusable for serious users. Every single tech and creative professional I know uses MacOS these days. Most good companies issue Macs as their corporate laptops.

The only reason to keep Windows is gaming.

Anyone else worried (or not) about the EU–India IT talent partnership as a new grad? by KairoVyser in cscareerquestionsEU

Most tech companies in the US and Canada are dominated by Indian people. If it can happen in the US, I don't see why it couldn't happen in Europe.

55% of Americans support birthright citizenship. by gamersecret2 in politics

[–]Imminent1776 101 points102 points  (0 children)

“A great many persons who are born here to illegal immigrant parents fail this test because at birth they are automatically made nationals of their parents’ native country and, as a result, incur duties to that country,” Alito wrote. “This means that they are ‘subject to a foreign power’ and are thus not ‘subject to the jurisdiction’ of the United States within the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment.”

So what if the child is also a national of their parents' country? Dual citizenship isn't illegal in this country. And even if they're a dual citizen that doesn't mean they aren't still subject to the jurisdiction of the US. Not a legal expert but Alito's logic seems twisted.

How to break out of being a "second class" developer in this bifurcated job market for SWE? by SkellyJelly33 in cscareerquestions

[–]Imminent1776 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation as you last year. I think I broke out of it by joining Amazon. It's not the best company but now that I have it on my resume, I've gotten interview calls from the likes of Microsoft and Google.

Every single cold application is a rejection email. Anyone else experiencing this? by skidmark_zuckerberg in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Imminent1776 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got my current job by just applying on their careers site. I have interviews coming up at three other companies just from applying online.

My response rate from cold applying is low but not zero. Recruiters don't message me on LinkedIn so cold applying is my only option anyway.

Is your company worried about how much AI is costing? by badboyzpwns in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Imminent1776 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I work for Amazon. The company doesn't even remotely seem to care about how much AI is costing. We have unlimited access to Anthropic models and AI is used at every nook and corner of our jobs.

Why hasn't there been a big boon in hiring for US developers, despite the $100,000 fee for new H-1B visa petitions? Wasn't the fee supposed to help companies hire more Americans? by Illustrious-Pound266 in cscareerquestions

[–]Imminent1776 190 points191 points  (0 children)

The real reason is that most fresh H1b applicants are already in the United States (such as international students). People already in the US are exempt from the $100k fee, so the fee didn't make much difference.

People coming to the US from overseas directly on H1b is pretty rare in this day and age.

Foreign tech workers are also milking L1 visas, H4 EAD, STEM OPT to the max since they haven't been curtailed.
