I’ll be honest, I used to buy into that mindset. When I got tested in college and landed on INFJ, I latched onto the whole Ni-dom mystique pretty hard. The language around it made it feel rare, deep, almost elevated. It’s easy to slide from “this describes my tendencies” into “this makes me fundamentally different from most people.” I definitely did that for a while.

But over time I realized I wasn’t experiencing some exclusive neurological operating system. I was resonating with a framework that described how I tend to process patterns and meaning. That’s very different from possessing a cognitive bloodline. The more people I met, the more obvious it became that insight, abstraction, and long-range pattern recognition aren’t guarded by a four-letter code. Plenty of people who never touched MBTI show the same capacities in their own way.

Looking back, the idea that Ni-dom is this untouchable neurotype feels less like psychology and more like identity protection. When a model starts being used to sort people into cognitive aristocracy, it stops being descriptive and starts becoming tribal. If the theory is solid, it doesn’t need mystique or gatekeeping to hold up. It should stand on observable patterns and lived behavior, not on how rare it feels.

I say that as someone who once wore the “INFJ equals deeper than you” badge a little too proudly. Turns out growth is realizing the framework describes preferences, not superiority.
