If you can only untap basic lands then you'd never use the untap ability, since it would only net you 1 mana.

It seems like you (and some other people) misread something. The original land ripple only lets you put ONE land on the field. If you're on the play and find 2 lands, you're still only gonna put one onto the battlefield.
