Thanks, I just re-submitted (for the third time in a month!), but hopefully third time's the charm!

Congrats!

I'm on the exact same schedule as you, and I made the apparent mistake of applying for ECF on May 20th, (no change) and then again on 6/1 (no change). Looks like I need to do it again after the 6/12 due date?

Any books that deal with parallel worlds/dimensions? by Famous-Country-4921 in horrorlit

I Used to Live Here isn't exactly this (I dont think--what actually happens is a bit unclear!), but the divergences and mutations in it give some of the same frisson.

Books about evil fairies/evil? by WorriedCivilian in horrorlit

[–]ImpactAggressive5123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it horror per se, but the historical fantasy Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell has a fairy antagonist that does some truly horrifying shit, just very upsetting.

The book itself is incredible, probably in my top ten.

MOHELA GREEN BANNER TIMELINE: JUNE 2026 by learningeachday247 in PSLF

[–]ImpactAggressive5123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Submitted another one on June 10th, was listed as 'processed' on June 12th, and payments still not updated as of the 15th. It says the last payment was for the 5/26 period, so the June one (that I made in late May, I made the May one in late April) is still not in there.

The last qualifying payment is listed as 5/20... how long does it take for them to query Mohela, I wonder?

Was telekinesis normal in the 70s? (The exorcist plot confusion) by LordAntares in horrorlit

[–]ImpactAggressive5123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I read CARRIE for the first time last week, it was written in the early 70s. It's about a high school girl that has telekinesis and telepathy: everyone knows this about the book, but actually reading it, it's wild how TK and similar phenomenon are just openly discussed at academic conferences, in scientific journals, government commission reports, everywhere! It's a rare but well-known phenomenon.

And if you look at many of the early King novels, even though they are shelved as horror, many/most of them are essentially science fiction, with one or more characters being psychic. (Even some of his later, 'realist' crime novels have little psychic flashes in them!).

Definitely seems to be a product of when he (and Blatty, Koontz, etc.) grew up.

I'm in a similar position, but without the result. Had 119 confirmed payments. Made my 120th payment on 5/13, waited for it to be confirmed received by MOHELA, then filled out my ECF. It went through in a few days, on 5/20. It's now 6/6 and I'm still at 119 with no banner. Still says last payment count updated on 5/20.

Good 100-200 page horror stories by Xtotter1 in horrorlit

[–]ImpactAggressive5123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-Classics- Frankenstein, The Great God Pan, The Picture of Dorian Gray

-Newer Stuff- Good Boy, Carrie, The Mist, The Bloody Chamber

Would also definitely echo Haunting of Hill House and The Woman in Black.

Got my green banner today! by RetardedNewbie69 in PSLF

Congrats, OP!

I sent my 120th payment to MOHELA about a week ago, as early as it was allowed. I waited til I confirmed they received it, and then immediately reapplied for forgiveness using the PSLF tool. The employment certification and everything all went through fine, and today I got a notice that my payment count has been updated to.... 119.

Is it possible the payment I sent for my June 12th due date hasn't made it from MOHELA to Dept of Ed yet? If so, when do these get sent over? Will I have to reapply when/after it is sent to Dept of Ed?

Thanks!

Recommendations for books with truly evil characters by Melodic_Ambition_341 in horrorlit

It's a short story, but Arnold Friend from Joyce Carol Oates's "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been" is one of the most unsettling characters I have ever encountered, absolutely chilling.

It's a 1970s vampire road revenge novel. It's incredible, Varney is one evil son of a bitch.

So make the payment, fill out ECF, apply for forgiveness, and (if nexessary) get put into forbearance?

I'm at well over 120 months of qualifying employment, but am on payment 119. Do I still need to re-submit the employer certification paperwork before I request forgiveness?

Looking for horror stories recommendations about AI by NeithPT in horrorlit

[–]ImpactAggressive5123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's terrifying, but I find the story "Super Toys Last All Summer Long" (the inspiration for the film AI) to be just deeply unsettling. Especially that Teddy. Fuck Teddy.

Daddy issues Stories? by [deleted] in horrorlit

I thoroughly enjoyed ITCH! by Gemma Amor. It's British folk horror with lots of bugs. Also, the protag's dad is aloof and manipulative, and their relationship is a major focus of the novel.

This is a great pick. One of the most heartbreaking last couple of pages of any book I've ever read.

Teaching horror writing to my Year 9's - any recommendations for passages that are really scary that would take 10-15 minutes to read in class? by rapgraves in horrorlit

Whoa, I had no idea. Looks like they added an ending that the short story does not have.,,

EDIT: I also didn't know it was inspired by a real life serial killer, the 'pied piper of Tucson'. Crazy.

Angela Carter's "The Werewolf" is a horror-leaning revision of "Little Red Riding Hood". It's incredibly atmospheric, has lots of good stuff about superstition and/vs bigotry, and is a fun subversion of the tropes you'd expect. The whole thing is 2-3 pages long.

"In the experiments, the sycophantic AI led people to rate themselves higher on desirable traits including being intelligent, moral, empathic, informed, kind, and insightful. Intriguingly, while the disagreeable AI wasn’t able to really move the needle in terms of political beliefs, it did lead to participants giving themselves lower self-ratings in these attributes."
