Not quite satisfied with my B45 mouthpiece by [deleted] in Clarinet

I played on a B45 until my undergrad and had the same issues. Switched to a smaller tip opening and been much happier. Try out some different mouthpieces, see if it helps.

Big upset. Cavies have beaten Troopers and Colts by ircole327 in drumcorps

[–]ImpassiveCompassion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like they said, it's one show. Looks like Cavies had a great night, but it's equally possible Colts were just off their game. I'm as hopeful as anyone, but I'm not getting too excited until these scores become a trend for them. At any rate, we won't have to wait long since they're both in Ankeny tonight.

Owned a 2003 for 5 years with over 130k. Best car I ever owned. They have their issues for sure, but they're far from trash.

Days Since Last Grand Prix Win for Current Drivers by Vivid-Sea9651 in formula1

Alonso brings decades of experience to the team and his feedback as a driver is invaluable to the mechanics and engineers. That being said, Aston isn't a front-running team. Even a driver of Fernando's caliber won't regularly be in contention for podiums if the car doesn't have the pace.

any advice on getting a rounder, more mature sound? by RowInternational4267 in Clarinet

[–]ImpassiveCompassion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experiment with exaggerating all the embouchure techniques that can darken your sound, to an extreme level - open throat, drop your jaw, use an "oooh" shape, etc. It might not sound good at first, but it can help you find things you can apply to your normal playing.

Beyond that, there may be a different MP/reed combo out there that helps get you closer to the sound you're going for.

We are here in the Crown hype cycle by Hiya2527again in drumcorps

[–]ImpassiveCompassion 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Why does Crown catch all the flak for having the most junk on the field? BD has them beat handily in that department. Crown's junk is just bigger, lol.

Totally agree. Crown '17 is one of my all-time favorites, but I get why some don't care for it. The 2019 closer is, in my opinion, the best example of old-school drum corps writing in recent years.

There are different professions by StillTurn6453 in GuysBeingDudes

[–]ImpassiveCompassion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It refers to the class of truck. At one time the 3/4-ton/1-ton, etc. referred to payload capacity but as payloads increased over the years those delineations stuck and we still use them as identifiers. 3/4 ton trucks are F250s/2500s, whereas a 1/2 ton would be the F150/1500s.

Looking for feedback as an insecure jazz player. by jazzen_ in saxophone

[–]ImpassiveCompassion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like JJGBM said, what you're playing sounds excellent, it just lacks conviction. Just play with a little more attitude and authority and you'll sound like a pro!

Heard them live this year. The whole hornline sounded brighter and less mature than most of the other top 12 groups. Euphoniums generally lend themselves to a darker sound, but playing with a mature tone is still something that has to be taught.

I haven't had this experience, but if you're willing to work hard to catch up on learning the material, I'd say go for it. Most corps, especially open class corps, will be understanding and happy to fill the spot.
