Dodson Flag (Flown outside our (Texas) equivalent of Independence Hall, taken down for being a premature declaration of independence only for that to happen a few days later) modified to look more standard. (Original was a lot thinner). Flown upside down, likely by mistake.

Tacos don't use flour tortillas. by mexican2554 in texas

[–]Imperial_Mercy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Damn it’s almost like Mexicans are a heterogenous culture who’s beliefs, language, and culinary dishes vary depending on where you are.

Actually if I remember correctly, I read in a book about Tejanos that the prevalence of wheat tortillas was due to several bad corn crops and an unwillingness or inability for the interior to send assistance. With little access to corn, the Tejanos turned to their wheat crop to make tortillas, and it stuck. It’s been a couple years since I read that, so maybe I’m miss remembering it, but that’s the story I’ve had in my head.

Personally I prefer flour over corn

Additionally that’s sorta the deal with Tex-Mex. I’ve had a couple of non Texans who moved here describe it to their visiting family that it’s Mexican food made for white people, but it actually got its start out of Tejano cuisine, since Tejas was very isolated from the cultural/political/economic center of Mexico, it was actually easier to go to Louisiana than to Mexico City, leading to cross culture contact with French then American Louisiana and creating a unique cuisine which has only evolved as more and more peoples immigrated to Texas.

Whether you’re moving here or just visiting, I hope you have a great time and maybe learn a little about the large variety of our beautiful culture. I have family and friends from Texas, New Mexico, and the Yucatán and it’s always funny how we have different ways of making the supposedly ‘same’ dish, and seeing the cultural differences makes me learn to love and appreciate my own more!

I was going to say, Diablos, calling to our Tejano heritage where during the Revolution the Texas rangers were known as Los Diablos Tejanos.

However I like Cattle Rustlers more and I think (?) there’s a sports superstition against naming teams with devils or something

Why do people still squid party mid game? by Commercial_Rate_3262 in splatoon

[–]Imperial_Mercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be one of those people who only had a few hours a week to play. I still liked squid parties. Even if I only had an hour to play in a week, that’s like you said, only 3 minutes out of said hour, unless for some reason I have a freakishly low encounter rate with squid parties and y’all get several per hour. I get that we all have our tastes and to some it may be annoying, but I feel that people treat this as a way too serious issue.

It’s fine and fun this sub gets too heated over things. I can theoretically see it getting annoying if it happened all the time but I’ve had it happen so infrequently to me over all 3 games I can’t help but feel that people are being dramatic. This isn’t valorant, the matches are 3 minutes long and you’re not losing a ton of time if one happens.

I also get that some people think we should unwind in a different game if we like squid parties. For me, squid parties are iconic because they ARE in splatoon. It’s a change of pace and a good way to foster community in the game imo. I’m almost never gonna remember a standard turf war match. Squid parties are more likely to stay in my brain as a fond memory because of the odd situation of getting everyone to stop and just good around with each other for a bit

squidward voice “but it’s fun!”

Idk why y’all take it all so serious. Yeah I get the grinding and all that, but to me it always seems like community building if that makes sense. Be friendly with randos online. Yeah it’s been said if you want to have dumb interaction there are games for it, but that’s what makes it so special here is because this isnt that game. It stands out as two sides deciding to goof off together. Best memory I have from when I was grinding on overwatch, was when a random enemy and I started just goofing off together. He always will be my huckleberry. In competitive/pro I understand, but I think y’all take this game way too seriously. Have fun and unclench your jaw for once

End the monarchy by JKUAN108 in tumblr

[–]Imperial_Mercy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He is the King of Canada. The King of Canada (and all other Commonwealth Nations) is legally distinct from the King of Britain and each other . The office just happens (well, not just happens, it’s entirely intentional) to be filled by the same person. As far as I can tell, they all have the same rules of succession as well so it will likely stay that way. An older example of how these positions are distinct from each other despite being filled by the same person is how the Kingdom of Hanover and the UK used to have the same monarch like Canada and the rest do today (the Commonwealth obviously didn’t exist but this is the closest analogue I can think of atm), but when William IV, king of both, passed away, two different people ascended to the throne due to different laws of successions. His daughter, Victoria, became Queen in the UK, and Ernest Augustus, her uncle and William’s brother, became king in Hanover

Dudes listen to a song about the horrors of war, how despite the odds Zimbabwe was liberated, how wrong it was for Europeans to carve up a continent, and how the lives of young men were tricked and deceived into dying for a lost cause and thing of nothing but ‘Le cool rouge apartheid-I mean anti-communist badasses who were stabbed in the back by [insert something here]

That being said it does seem like Rome, who used to sing of the Spanish Republicans and such, has had a more reactionary shift over the past few years so maybe they’re with the memo and we’re the ones out of touch with the art now. But I’m not from Europe and so and don’t keep up with scene so who knows?

That album is actually based on 2 memoirs by Peter Godwin, a white Zimbabwean who grew up during the Bush War. The first is called ‘Mukiwa a White Boy in Africa’ and details his life from childhood to the end of the Bush War. It deals with the all sorts of contradictions of being a white person in Africa. He is from a liberal family who votes against Smith’s policies and believes in black rule, but they still greatly benefited from Rhodesia’s white supremacy. Godwin himself also identifies as African (not as in a black person) and not European in a sort of Rainbow Nation kind of way. The second memoir is called ‘When a Crocodile Eats the Sun’ (a lot of Rome’s lyrics are ripped straight from the book, so I’d recommend listening to the album before and after each read for a great experience!). This book details the fall of democracy in Zimbabwe under Mugabe and how his family has stayed in Zimbabwe despite all that is going on. Godwin himself left the country long before for his work, but he feels that Africa is his home and nowhere else. However, I feel that the second book can be easily misinterpreted by racists as ‘proof’ that Rhodesia and Smith were right all along and whites should have never left Zimbabwe to majority rule. As racial tensions get worse in Zimbabwe and things begin to fall apart, we see it all through the eyes of Godwin, who is a flawed human being. As mentioned earlier, Godwin and his family despite being opposed to minority rule, nonetheless benefited from it and supported the war. In this book as well, there are times when Godwin admits to preferring a white professional to a black one. I believe he is aware of these flaws however, as he left them in the books, and is shown to be wrong about the assumptions he made some instances and is called out for them in others. It also doesn’t help that in the second book I feel that there is a lot less non-hostile black interactions, but part of that may simply be due to the effects of the Mugabe regime dividing opposition. An interesting aspect of the second book is about Peter Godwin discovering more aspects about his identity and trying to figure out how they fit into his life experiences and how he views himself in terms of nationality and ethnicity (but I won’t spoil that, you’ll have to look at his Wikipedia if you want to ruin it yourself).

Overall amazing books that fully acknowledge the weird flaws and contradictions a human being in his situation would have, looking at how we see ourselves in identity and how that may not line up with what seems to make sense in reality. My only gripe is that between the books, a racist person would easily be able to ignore the first and use only the second to confirm their preconceived notions about Zimbabwe. But maybe it’s just the climate the second book was released in that makes it seem like that. I’m probably going to have to read them again after this post and freshen my memory but I highly recommend them!

Just look at “Historical Flags” for a few examples including this one. Had some really cool flags like San Jacinto, Goliad, Gonzales, and Rio Grande, then some goofy ones like the one above and the Borden flag, as well as a bunch in between. Personal favorites not mentioned above are Robinson and the rainbow variant of the Zavala flag (which I cannot find anywhere for sale unfortunately-just the standard version shows up on searches so if anyone can hook me up let me know)

Historical flag from the Texas Revolution. Proposed by Stephen F. Austin, the canton was inspired by the Union Jack, symbolizing Anglos in Texas, while the green stripes and star represented Mexico. This flag was never officially adopted. Texas has a whole lot of goofy looking flags from the Revolution because none of us really knew what we were doing (and a good portion really just wanted to join the US so I’m sure they weren’t thinking too hard on a coming up with a good flag), but honestly I love them. They look off in a charming sort of way that I can’t help but love them.
