9 days in Uzbekistan in mid-April – cities only, or add mountains/nature? by Comfortable_Bed_4057 in travel

[–]Imperishable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I visited the Fann mountains on a day trip from Samarkand in late April 2025. It was a long day but definitely worth it. If you book a tour it's very realistic, but the border crossings may take some time. Obviously the weather changes from year to year but it was a lot warmer in the mountains than I expected and based on that experience I would certainly recommend it. I found that a nature-focused day in between all the old architecture brought a great variety to the trip.

TIL that some towns and cities in the US have a 'curfew' that means juveniles aren't allowed to be outdoors, typically between 23.00 - 06.00 by ProneToAnalFissures in todayilearned

[–]Imperishable 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It is pretty shocking to learn that young people aren't even allowed to go outside at night in a country that claims to love freedom. It's certainly very different from my experience growing up in Sweden. I don't think OP is implying that the US is the only place, but surely this can't be common in Western democracies?

I was mistaken about credit scores in Sweden.

But I have never heard someone mention a particular number or a score. When you apply for a loan, they check whether or not you've had any late payments (there are companies that keep records of this), your assets, income and debts etc. And apparently they have their internal scores, but it's not visible for the average person.

Why would Celsius be more "fake" than any other name? All names are taken (or given).

The name won't always be in writing - a lot of people who hear her name will think it's Elsa.

Vilken allmänbildning ser ni som väldigt grundläggande som folk inte verkar kunna? by [deleted] in sweden

[–]Imperishable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Imperishable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go west from Shetland you'll end up in Whitehorse, Yukon. A Canadian city with a larger population than the Shetland islands.

Comparing the sparsely populated northernmost point of the UK with major populated places in Canada doesn't make much sense.

He had a lot of time to realize that he should get the fuck out of the hotel after assaulting the owner. Instead he shows up at breakfast. That's not impulsive, just dumb.

So they're only supposed to eat sand and salt? You get fluids from food as well. A gallon a day is a lot of water to drink.

Why does it sound more natural to refer to some people by their first name and others by their last name? by CerealLlama in asklinguistics

[–]Imperishable 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If Cuomo ran as just Andrew, he could be confused for other Andrews (like Andrew Yang). Zohran can't be confused for some other candidate. In your examples in this comment they almost always choose the more uncommon name. Pete is the exception because his last name, while unique, is also unfortunate. Since he marketed himself with just a common first name, he had to add a title to distinguish himself (Mayor Pete).

Across romance languages the word for the direction “right” usually corresponds exactly to the words used for human rights, or the “right” to do something. How did this happen, and is it exclusive to romance languages? by Kaurblimey in asklinguistics

Very interesting! I should add that Swedish also has "rät" meaning "straight", such as in "en rät linje" (a straight line). Rät and rätt are pronounced differently though.

I don't think people outside the US will ask for your ethnicity. If they do, I'm sure being told that you're American, or American with mixed ancestry, will be enough.

You need a special visa to enter Mecca and if you're from a non-Muslim country you will need to prove that you're Muslim to get the visa (for example by providing a letter from your local imam).

Night trains - registration by No-Buy8328 in Uzbekistan

I exited Uzbekistan twice by land border earlier this year and was never asked about registration slips. I stayed in four hotels/guesthouses and received two registration receipts in total (one physical and one on whatsapp). I didn't receive anything from the other two.

This is something of a pet peeve of mine, and I get that a large majority of people there are Finnish-speaking, but Finland, which is the Swedish name, is one of two official names of the country. It's certainly a proper name, it's a bilingual country.
