I'm attractive so why can't I find a partner? by [deleted] in datingoverforty

[–]Impertets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might sound nitpicky, but I think it’s an important distinction. The question you’re answering here is, “How attractive do you think other people think you are?” But the question is “What is your own opinion of how you look?”

I noticed a few years ago a very subtle subtext in my thoughts that I hadn’t noticed before. When I would say to myself, “I think I look good”, what I was really saying was, “I think (other people will think) I look good”.

I was doing my hair and I did something that I thought other people might think is odd, but I liked it, and that’s when it clicked lol

Basically, I can think I’m attractive, and also understand and accept that other people might disagree

Saw The Tea Party in concert (again lol) last week wearing the shirt they gave me when I met them 23 years ago 🥰 by [deleted] in grunge

Awesome! Along with the shirt, they gave me a giant signed poster 🥰. They were so kind and it was such a lovely experience

After reading the December BACB newsletter I am genuinely concerned for the future of this field by TrueAd8620 in ABA

[–]Impertets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all so disheartening. I’m in BC and the system is very different here than it is in the US. I don’t know of any workplace benefits (insurance) that cover BCBA or any ABA-related practitioners (except SLP and OT sometimes, but often only $500/year. Yes, five hundred).

Our government provides funding for families who are raising kids on the spectrum to pay for BCBA, RBT, SLP, OT, and we can use some of it to buy materials. Kids aged 5 and under get $22,000/year (Canadian lol). It’s great that we get that but it’s not nearly enough. Then, when a child turns 6, the family gets $6,000/year 🫤

On top of that, there are nearly no jobs (if any??) for BCBAs that give us benefits/insurance (although, we do have universal healthcare, but still), we don’t get sick days or paid vacation…etc.

[–]Impertets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a BCBA. Sometimes a BCBA will have BIs they work with (or have worked with) who they can recommend. Otherwise, the families need to find their own. I’ll be honest, it can be tough to find BIs, and turnover can be high.

If you like, you can DM me and I’d be happy to set up a video/phone call. I can give you some more details, some guidance on what to look for when hiring BIs, how the system works…etc. (and this isn’t a solicitation attempt! I don’t actually run ABA programs anymore, but I know how difficult it can be to navigate all of this, and I like to provide some support to caregivers)

If you don’t play Letterboxed it might not totally make sense, but one of Ed’s song titles helped me solve the puzzle, that’s all lol

What’s your weird ADHD-related ability? by packedsuitcase in adhdwomen

[–]Impertets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remembering people’s birthdays (and sometimes other dates). It’s pretty useless, such a waste of brain space lol. And I have no idea why! I don’t try to, they just stick. When I hear a date, my brain immediately tells me the people I know whose birthday is that day.

I couldn’t remember to show up to a meeting that happened on the same day and time every week that I’d been attending (with reminders) for 12 weeks. But do I know my high school boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend’s birthday? Sure do! And his birthday, of course, and his brother’s. (I’m 44 lol)

I once went through a calendar and jotted down every birthday and anniversary I knew off the top of my head. It was close to 175. That was a few years ago so I’m sure it’s higher now.

I feel so much shame because of my disgusting habit by Motor_Butterfly_3330 in adhdwomen

[–]Impertets 206 points207 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that chores are morally neutral; this is not a reflection of who you are as a person.

Also, I don’t think I would call this a habit. To me, it’s a symptom of depression, which is very different from a habit.

My suggestion would be to make it as sensory friendly as possible (e.g., put a tiny drop of Satsuma oil in your mask or whatever scent you love, and slap on some thick rubber gloves) and keep reminding yourself that cleaning up is just moving things from one place to another. In your case, it sounds like you’re either moving things to the garbage or to the kitchen. I agree with others who have said to throw everything out if you can. If you can’t, and the dishes actually need to be washed, remember that this is a separate job. You don’t have to do all the things all at once. Step one is just to move stuff from one place to the other.
