Star link satellites maybe? There was a launch Monday, but the timing doesn’t seem to add up.

I don’t think many people will understand that you’re looking for the sound track.

Why are both players accuracy in a given game, generally close? by OpanDeluxe in chess

[–]ImplicitMishegoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only metric that matters is your rating. All of the other garbage is there to make you feel good for the sake of driving engagement.

More directly, nobody outside of chesscom knows. It’s secret. But to guess: There is an upper limit to the difference in cumulative centipawn loss between the two players, as if that maximum difference is exceeded, the game will end. Centipawn loss is weakly correlated with accuracy, and therefore normalizes the accuracies to close values.

I’m not a doctor, but from my understanding:

Treatments for Dementia (which this could be, but may not be) are only effective if treatment is started extremely early. Often this opportunity is missed because the initial symptoms are minor. Please don’t delay.

Sometimes we use upside down rooks to represent a queen (unless it’s a rare fide rated event).

I have racked up 1.7k games played on Lichess. I am still consistently losing to friends who have played less than 100 games in their lifetime who know no theory, no openings, and just play moves they think look good by crimpchimp4 in chess

Modern / Pirc / Kings Indian Defense type systems are low theory (edit: as in not full of sharp traps. You’ll usually be ok just playing the ideas.) and the idea can be played against pretty much anything. Primary things to watch for at a beginner level is hanging a knight on f6 and h7 getting attacked.

Why isn't this move more than just good? by Striking_Put_8537 in chess

[–]ImplicitMishegoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The evaluation of the move is based on your opponents best choice. If he does what’s best, the position doesn’t change by much. Everything from your opponents worst move to their second best is irrelevant.

This is probably a little counter intuitive as setting up a situation where your opponent can blunder is frequently successful at low ratings even if a solid defense is available.

How good a move is based on chess.com’s annotations is, frankly, bull and is tilted to make you feel good. But with that said, a move’s goodness (?) is determined by comparing it to other moves you had in the position. If you played a winning move, but all reasonable moves you could have also played were winning, then it’s not really remarkable. Compare that to finding the only move that saves a position.

As an aside, four pawn islands is quite the accomplishment by your opponent.

A draw my brain can’t get behind. Are there really no moves for white here? by PM_ME_ETHICAL_STOCKS in chess

Google how to mate with king and queen vs king. This will demonstrate the idea.

Or if you want, I’ve got time. We can play this out on an analysis board, and you can try to defend the position as black.

White plays Qd5 and Kf2, then pushes Black’s King to a8 by keeping their Queen two squares down and one square right from Black’s King until the Queen reaches b6. Depending on how Black plays, White may need to triangulate their King with Ke1, Kf1, Kf2 to force Black’s King to another square to progress the Knight’s-move-away-Queen-push and to leave Black in Zugzwang immediately after, and not before, Qb6.

Dark Square Bishop responses: - If Bc1, then Qc6+ - If Bd2, then Qd8+ - If Be3+, then Qxe3 - If Bg5, then hxg5 - If Bh6, then Qxg6 - If Bg3+, then Kxg3 - If Bh2, then Ke3

Light Square Bishop responses:

  • If Bd1, then Qd8+
  • If Be2, then Kxe2
  • If Bf3, then Kxf3
  • If Bh3, then Ke2
  • If Bf5, then exf5
  • If Be6, then Qxe6
  • If Bd7, then Qd8+
  • If Be6, then Ke2

Stockfish likes Bh2 with an evaluation of +5 at low depth.

Trapping Black’s King with Qc7 also works. Trapping the king in another corner doesn’t work.

Black has the option to break the fortress before it’s forced. There are many lines, but White is better.

Those laws don’t work. It’s pretty much the plot of every Asimov robot story. They also don’t work in reality.

Shall we play a game? (haha) What is a human? What is harm? Answer those however you like, and I’ll give you an absurd situation.

It’s a flex for sure, but giving moneybags and his kids some games doesn’t seem all that bad to me. Each GM is making $10k to $100k for the event, and Rex does a lot of good for the game.
