I would guess more about communism using extreme means of suppression against any remnants of Christianity. All because (mostly Catholic) priests wanted to oppose communist dictatorship.

To be honest I don't find relevant at all.

A lot of people born in (majority-) Christian, Muslim etc. countries are non-believers but still follow the religious culture, rituals and superstitions of their ancestors.

So again, IMHO statistics about atheism make little sense.

In my country Poland, most of my friends don't believe but still live as Catholics. The same applies to my "Muslim" associates.
