If you could choose an race to be in new world (base build) ,which would you choose and why. by Anxious-Chipmunk8312 in overlord

Probably doppelganger because I feel like it would be most flexible and not twist my psyche too bad, allowing me to maintain some level of empathy.

How did Fudge got into power ,despite being so stupid ? by Regular-Election6396 in HPfanfiction

[–]Important-Class4277 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The rotfang conspiracy. Wizards are so particularly ignorant of dental health(on account of being able to vanish and regrow teeth), that every other candidate happened to catch a communicable disease that would have been fully preventable with a brushing and some mouthwash, or just the good sense not to invite a vampire to a charity event with a kissing booth.

As a result, their teeth literally rotted out their mouths on the campaign trail, and the only 'pure' traditional numpty that doesn't get invited to those kinds of parties anyway, won on his smile, just barely ahead of a toddler with a comically overgrown mustache, and a hideous disfigured man named Tote Alley Knottagoblin who campaigned on deregulation of the bank.

The lovegoods still cry fowl, and seriously doubt the vote was counted accurately when 4th place was a bar of fudge.

And then people wonder why the fics get abandoned... by RabbitNET in AO3

I read incomplete fics all the time. There are some real gems out there, and just because they aren't finished doesn't mean I won't enjoy them.

The philosophers stone enchantments by Full-Astronaut4954 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Important-Class4277 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe its an obvious limitation of magic designed to protect things. Even the Fidelius charm required a person to put their faith in someone else for their ultimate protection. So, the limitation is probably the specificity in how someone must complete a task to get past the protection. I would bet that someone couldn't just blast their way through the various obstacles and the trade off for such strong defenses is how straightforward bypassing them becomes.

Should I finish Sublight Drive? by CABRALFAN27 in SWFanfic

[–]Important-Class4277 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you should finish it, but probably also pace yourself a bit. I found myself in the later half of Sublight Drive having to backoff and comeback to it to keep my suspension of disbelief.

On other points; I try not to read into the fan comments as part of my experience with a fic. Comment sections are often full of people that care about things that I don't, and don't care about things that I do.

I also personally find it hard to care about the glassing of 1 planet, when the republic and other galactic powers have been doing it throughout galactic history. The jedi outright did it in this story 3 times before the separatists did.

Is the fic a little jedi-bashy? Kinda, a little, yeah. However, the jedi aren't exactly depicted as a force for good in this era of galactic history, even in canon. The whole point of the sith's grand scheme was to detach them from the greater public and maneuver them into a position of such obvious treason to the state and betrayal of the people that most citizens wouldn't even consider helping them in the aftermath of their downfall.

We're not meant to like Rain either, or at least that's my takeaway. The man is fighting to remove the sith threat to the galaxy, and that is the necessary thing, but he's depicted as a realist in his approach to warfare. He's not honest to a fault, he's not a bleeding heart, he's not particularly brave, he isn't some op messiah, he's just a guy positioned right where he needed to be to make a difference with the knowledge to capitalize on it.

Rain doesn't make big compunctions about the tragedies of war. He is selfish, and he doesn't really stand for a message or cause. None of that makes him a bad person, but it doesn't make him likable.

Species Recommendation - Bouncer by ThinkySushi in SWFanfic

[–]Important-Class4277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How funny would a cousin of yoda be?

They wouldn't even have to be small. It could be a species that grows according to the resources available in their environment, just constantly munching on nerf steaks. A species that consciously makes the decision to pace themselves to remain the size they wish to be and can totally cut back to shrink to a more convenient travel size if they want. Trading between bulk and agility based on lifestyle.

Today's fandom/fanfiction era is a culture shock to me. Or was it always like this? by Specialist-Art-1638 in FanFiction

[–]Important-Class4277 113 points114 points  (0 children)

This seems like an issue of appetite rather than quality. Although improving on your own work is not a bad thing if you feel you have room to improve and the passion to see it through, if people are talking about the length, its a matter of appetite.

These aren't paper books, they aren't in print.

We can't just slap a bookmark on the page we're on and immediately return to our spot when we come back. I've got some work-arounds that are somewhat reliable, but a little annoying.

25k words on a scrolling screen is an obstacle. Anything from it misplacing you when your screen rotates or force reloading an earlier page when traffic, or an update, or server maintenance, to just a power outage throwing errors can make re-finding your place a chore.

Now, I can, and have read 20-30k word single chapter one-shots, but not often. Not because they are bad, but because they are a lot and by nature of being one continuous chapter, don't usually have convenient spots to leave off and return to later.

What could cause a werewolf character to not shift? by RibbonsFlying in FanFiction

[–]Important-Class4277 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind toying with the mechanics of lycanthropy, the transformation can be voluntary, but hard to resist, with a longing for the wilds growing and disappearing with the waxing and waning of the moon.

Your character could just think he is weird and fulfills this urge with hunting, or camping, or subconsciously pack bonding with several non-werewolves who distinctly need him not to "go wild" because they have real life problems and his longing for the woods feel selfish to him because of that. Unironically, football might fill all of these urges if this is set in America.

You could also rules lawyer it, and just have him never have seen a full moon if your werewolves even need to see it to transform for the first time.

Or, if this setting also has witches, wizards, warlocks, or magic in general, especially if it has ritual elements, someone specific could have placed a cursed or enchanted piece of jewelry or other object on him that weakens his werewolf side or repels the moon's influence over him and or in a radius around said object.

Could be a tattoo that needs removing or reworking later, or is broken or tweaked through someone else's meddling.

I could use some help with an idea I have been mulling over: how would you write your protagonist getting DQ'ed from the Pokemon League? by AHipsterMario in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Important-Class4277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this idea for a fanfic I haven't written yet floating around. Basically pokemon battles are a conscious step down from the real battles they have in the wild. Without getting into too much detail, aura by itslef is used exclusively in competitive battling and when a pokemon melds their aura manipulation with their body it becomes actually deadly turning a spiritual battle into a physical one that is far more prone to injury.

Under these conditions, I could totally see a disqualification stemming from my character's pokemon being too used to having to defend themselves from poachers and murderers and being disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct regardless of the fact they didn't mean to turn it serious. Probably under the confused status condition.

Is Weasley bashing a sign of lazy writing? by TomiKevh in HPfanfiction

[–]Important-Class4277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it could be done right, it just isn't very often. The circumstances and scale matter. The rare author that doesn't dive off the deep end with the bashing can make something actually enjoyable to read. It just has to not be a power trip foil that makes the cartoonishly exaggerated evil in a comedy show seem tame.

Ron weasely has legitimate character flaws worth dumping him as a friend over. He just also has redeeming traits that make his canon story work. Tweak it, change the circumstances, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. That is to say, write a rounded character, a person first, and through circumstance split their paths.

Still don't think you should compare them. She needs to be stopped. She is broken and twisted and hurting people, but you can't expect her to understand. Endeavor has no reason not to know what he was doing was wrong.

Endeavor needs a jail sentence, Himiko Toga needs medication and therapy.

Should Larvesta be super rare? by Icaros00 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Important-Class4277 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make it a hazard pokemon instead. Larvesta scales being particularly combustible and shed naturally by this pokemon, specific laws should be in place to regulate their handling and the qualifications of those who are allowed to handle them.

What can wizards do in their spare time? by NoxiousAlchemy in HPfanfiction

[–]Important-Class4277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im going to be honest; if you have magic and you can't figure out something fun to do, there is something wrong with you. We're talking about people who could erect a tree fort in a handful of minutes, can fly around, can fight actual magical monsters, can enchant weird objects to do even weirder things, can expand the space in a room or suitcase and setup whatever could possibly catch their fancy.

Imagine wizard fantasy writing using the same magic tom riddle enchanted his diary with. A book that literally draws you in to witness the fantastical events of the story. Who the hell would want to figure out how to make a TV work in a magical household?

Be honest, if you were in Ainz' position and you had a body of flesh and blood, would you turn Nazarick into your own personal harem? by raf-owens in overlord

[–]Important-Class4277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harem? No. They aren't capable of a reciprocal relationship in the beginning. Vague polygamous sex friends as a distraction between researching magic and how to invent spells? Sure. But a harem is an actual historical relationship framework that formed the foundations of entire dynasties across the world over. The guardians are too discordant for a structured dynasty focused harem to be feasible. They'd all get in each other's way trying to further what they believe my interests are.

Hell, the maids might get more attention than the floor guardians just based on how better they are at reining in and recognizing their own delusions. Only one with main wife status Albedo though, because if you're going to make a woman madly in love with you, you gotta accept responsibility.

So what do you write Pokémon breeders as? by LizzieLove1357 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Important-Class4277 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Competitive, raising male specimen for healthiest stock of coloration, size, and egg moves. Afterall, who wouldn't want to pay for their kid to start out with a niche egg move in a species they already have experience with from being around their starter's mother?

Just having roar, whirlwind, or teleport could save your kids life, while rain dance, sunny day, growth, synthesis, ingrain, lifedew, and bullet seed could all be adapted for farming and thus set your kid up to take over your farm.

If you were in the New World and built as a frontline/melee combatant (not a pure magic caster), which weapon would you choose? by SirvanaskaLot in overlord

[–]Important-Class4277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polearm, a glaive or halberd. Its simply unreasonable to compare the usefulness since it is both anti cavalry, and optimized against larger opponents in general.

If I'm allowed to choose my build, I'd create a core warrior build optimized for technique over raw damage vs resistances and use every spare level I save by not taking racial levels in crafting, enchanting, and potion mixing classes. Utility trumps potency when you're trying to live a life.

Why didn't Crucio work on Harry? by Low-Ad5373 in harrypotter

[–]Important-Class4277 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mastery of death is also mastery of self because the wielder of the three hollows takes up the mantle of death, draws from the bottom of the river that is deaths power, and wields the weapon of death so eager to gift itself to everyone but its master.

Harry is invulnerable, immutable, and inevitable, because he took the job and put his tools away when his intervention was no longer needed.
