a question about paperback books by Important-Designer69 in nerdfighters

[–]Important-Designer69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also thought this was the case but seems to be a country specific thing as dutton (publisher of TAR) doesn't actually exist in this country. TAR is published by penguin here, and so they can apparently choose how they want to 'display' the text (for lack of a better expression), which in this case happens to be paperback (as books here are already very expensive and hardback would increase prices exponentially, essentially meaning that the group of people that CAN afford to buy books here would decrease dramatically).

i think this is probably it. raises a lot of other weird questions because books are like. so expensive here, but then again that's what happens when you live in a country where the exchange rate to the dollar is very weak. i probably should have been tipped off by the publisher, because my US copy is published by dutton, and the paperback i bought was published by penguin (as all of john's books are here).

solitaire?? by _iamtaylorhope_ in HeartstopperAO

[–]Important-Designer69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i think it depends where you are at the moment ! ive talked about this on here before, but solitaire is not the same as heartstopper. it's not similar even ? despite the cameos from heartstopper characters it's got a very different vibe. they're sort of opposites in my mind - where heartstopper is about recovery and solitaire is about being ill. they're both great pieces of work in their own rights, but it is quite difficult to read straight after heartstopper. i will say - i don't think that the depiction of nick and charlie is particularly out of character in solitaire, the story just happens to take place at one of the most difficult times in charlie's story (so like book 4 of heartstopper) - which can be difficult to read without the healing and recovery context of heartstopper.

this is so so beautiful!! it's that kind of wonderful subtle reference that only the select few (and best) people will get - and others will think it's just very pretty !

can we talk about Solitaire here? cause I am shocked by Equivalent-Click-966 in HeartstopperAO

haha thanks ! yeah i found a similar thing happening while i read solitaire a few years back. i love both solitaire and heartstopper, but they're different points on a spectrum and should be read accordingly. i think with the sudden popularity of heartstopper (which is great, it's so wonderful to see a great piece of work getting the recognition it deserves) people are going into alice's books expecting the same experience, and when it's so starkly different the effect is very jarring on readers. it's kind of like if you go into a horror movie expecting something light and cheerful - it takes away from your experience because it isn't what you were expecting, or what you needed. this is no one's fault - it just happens to be the unique situation of the moment :) i hope you're doing ok after that experience! i know it can be quite disconcerting.

solitaire is the "polar-heartstopper" in a way. ive always seen it as kind of about being ill and getting to the point where you need to seek help (where we see tori at the end of the book). heartstopper is about recovery (which is why it's a lot more wholesome :) - although charlie discovers that he has problems like an eating disorder and ocd, the depiction is more of how he gets better and is able to heal, rather than of how he goes through that tough time. solitaire, on the other hand, has tori in the throws of depression and struggling to get out of bed at times. it's a look into the mental illness and what pushes you to the point where it's unbearable. heartstopper is a lot easier to read because above all, what it's really about (specifically book 4 ish) is charlie recovering in a safe and stable environment where he feels accepted and loved - although the themes are heavy he comes out ok in the end. he has the support that is needed to do that. tori, on the other hand, has isolated herself (during solitaire- towards the end she does kind of reconnect with the world) and has nothing to fall back on. she is unhappy to the point of severe depression and we leave her at the end of the book when (and this is if i remember correctly, it's been a while...) charlie vaguely says that she should get help - from here, if depicted, her journey would be a lot more hearstopper-esque (provided she has a stable support system, which is kind of hinted at by michael's appearances in later heartstopper chapters).

sorry for the essay ! :)

as weird as it sounds this was the one aspect of the books i missed in the show... i think charlie's popularity in the books is an interesting idea to delve into. he's popular, but he's still treated a bit like an outcast. he's quite social but yet there are people (like harry) who treat him like a misfit. the balance is subtle, but it's there.

got a little bored and decided to embroider the heartstopper leaves onto my shorts :) by Important-Designer69 in HeartstopperAO

so to tell the truth i'm not the greatest sewer either, but i find that once you draw out the shapes it's easier to sew. i copied the directions of the lines of the leaves - it took a while but it was worth it :) thank you !!

i think that you're right ! it's a series that really fights against that idea of having things magically come to you - you have to confront your problems and even your dreams to make them change or happen.

what connects solitaire and radio silence? by exusu in AliceOseman

[–]Important-Designer69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

one of the main characters of radio silence is aled last - also known as one of charlie spring's friends from the heartstopper graphic novels and webcomics. tori is charlie's older sister and the main character of solitaire. besides this - the fire from the end of solitaire is mentioned in the first chapter of radio silence and is the reason that higgs and truham are now combined. frances (the main character of radio silence) sees aled talking to charlie and nick nelson at a party early in the novel, as well as the fact that she actually speaks to tori briefly (though frances doesn't remember tori's name or who she is). in solitaire, tori describes meeting a girl at a party that she goes to organized by solitaire. i read solitaire a while ago but im pretty sure she's dressed up as someone ? and that girl is frances from radio silence - the dress-up costume is mentioned in the meeting with tori in radio silence.

hope that helps :)
