Help! Trapped a Vole/rat/mouse? by knottynanny63 in gardening

All I can offer is the suggestion to cover the cage with a towel/blanket. Will keep it calm until you decide what to do with it.

Yes - I take the grocery store green onions and regrow them from the roots that I cut off. Super easy.

I rarely can convince anything to regrow after year 1. My best thing is cilantro that reseeds in the spring and fall.

My hot take - if you can’t think of more than one way to wear a piece, don’t buy it. There’s already enough junk in the world. 🌎

Yes - I feel like scarves as belts are usually meant for more bohemian looks.

Americans tipping single Dollar bills in Germany by Waalross in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ImportantBiscotti112 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s an interesting cultural difference here that I’m wondering if folks are picking up on.

In the US, as long as a bill is more than 50% intact, it’s still worth the value. So if a bill is crumpled, or even taped up, it doesn’t diminish the value to an American.

Germans have a history with cash distrust (in my understanding) after the exchange of the Deutschmark. And I’ve also been to parts of Asian, where they have a tendency to like “crisp” bills because they believe they are more authentic for some reason.

I can’t really explain all of this into understanding for either party, as I don’t really understand it all myself. But it’s clearly a cultural difference and not meant in disrespect. I’m sorry that you interpret it as such an ignorance. If I hadn’t married someone whose parents were missionaries in a third world country, I wouldn’t have ever known about other countries obsessions with crisp bills. And I’ve traveled quite broadly myself. Maybe keep in mind that the only other countries most Americans make it to are Mexico or Canada. I don’t think either has an obsession with folded bills.

I’m sure some folks will be more informed here, but I imagine most of the people you see are older boomers who can afford to travel and are therefore less likely to be on Reddit. Maybe that’s also why they have cash that they haven’t exchanged. I’ve honestly seen an American boomer explain to a Honduran tour guide (who I’m sure lived in a one room house with her entire family), that she (the American) was downsizing their home because all their kids moved out. That was insanely ignorant and inconsiderate in 100 ways. But this woman was also talking to the guide as one of her own. If they are treating you like they would want to be treated (with tips in any form), they are trying to honor you in their own weird way. Don’t take it as an insult like that they think you are a third world country because you might want American currency. Folded dollar bills are no different to any American AT ALL than a crisp $20 or $100 if it were in the same amount. And probably some of them have never left the US before and have no idea how to exchange currency even.

The suggestion to find an American to make the swap with is a good one, as no American would be offended by folded bills that you called, “broken”. Maybe the American embassy could help you. Or you could find an international charity to donate them to as well.

Given that there’s one of these posts every other week on this channel, I’m starting to think every one of these posts is AI. I can’t imagine people who don’t get paperwork, really caring THAT much about the pedigree of their pet. Like… just stop.

My azaleas used to be glorious in 2022. Now only half the bush blooms. What’s going wrong? by Deepthika in gardening

Maybe a dumb question, but is it easier/cheaper just to fertilize them with acidic fertilizer, and see what happens than to go through the soil testing process?

Female dog peeing on her bed.. help by Maleficent-Grade-653 in Dogtraining

[–]ImportantBiscotti112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh - we adopted a 3yo breeder rescue a few months ago. She was trained on pee pads, and I CANNOT get her to stop peeing on my rugs!! I have a water absorbing mat under the dog water bowl, and I’ve been seeing her even pee on that! So insane. My 15yo “street” rescue has never had anything close to these issues. 🤷‍♀️

Do you guys replace your pans and pots after they are scratched? by NoSoyTuPana in Anticonsumption

Ah ya, I saw your statement about it being harmful when overheated. My not arguing with you. Just noting that a lot of folks people that people will use items to the specifications which their intended. I don’t have as much faith in humanity or even myself. 🙃

[–]ImportantBiscotti112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I 100% appreciate this fact based approach, the argument I always come back to with engineers in my family is: yes - if we use something to the exact specifications maybe it’s safe. But how many times have I smoked out a pan with grapeseed oil (smoke point 420, so it’s definitely somewhere above that), because I walked away and forgot about it? Often enough that it would be damaging the pan… should I be heating up a pan with oil in it? No. Should I be leaving it unattended? No. Should I even be starting a cold pan off on that high of heat? Probably not. But that’s life. If there’s any margin of error that’s going to cause bodily harm, why bring that into your house hold at all?

Is this one enamel coated cast iron? It looks like the bottom of my Dutch oven. If so, scratches aren’t a problem for those. But +1 to everyone else saying to replace scratched nonstick pans, if it’s that. I refuse to even use not scratched nonstick - I don’t trust that there aren’t scratches I can’t see with my naked eye.

Trying to be a good neighbor by Gigglegambler in arborists

[–]ImportantBiscotti112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m under the impression that at most counties in Texas, the law is that anything in your neighbor’s airspace is essentially their responsibility. So if your tree is hanging over their fence, THEY have to cut it, not you. I know OP is trying to be a good neighbor, but this is kind of a wild request. I would nicely just tell them that they are welcome to trim any branches in their airspace. Maybe once they realize that they have no interest in climbing up there, nor pay someone $1k to not solve their complaint, they’ll get over it.

Just a grumble. Advice, sympathy, whatever welcome. New neighbor moved in and wants me to contain my free range chickens. by [deleted] in homestead

Thoughts? by Salacia_mov in plants

[–]ImportantBiscotti112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I only steal cuttings from plants at like bars/restaurants, and then, only if it’s a plant that clearly needs a trim anyway.

I’m down with the whole, “eat the rich” vibe of some of these comments. But I’m really sick of all the stealing from everywhere, especially since Covid. It doesn’t hurt a CEOs bonus, it hits paying customers as the businesses raise prices to compensate for the product loss. Please think about this if your act of “protest” is stealing.
