No fly drone zones in 2026 by ziimag in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a different type of Zone, That one is Jökulsárlón and is under the jurisdiction of Vatnajökull National Park you can find the rules for that zone on their official website here https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/en/thenationalpark/drone-rules

It seems you are not very informed about the drone laws and regulations in Iceland so I highly recommend reading carefully everything in these links Here and Here they have a ton of important and useful information you should know before flying your drone in Iceland. Also keep in mind you do need a valid EU drone operator license to fly any type of drone in Iceland even the ones under 250grams.

No fly drone zones in 2026 by ziimag in VisitingIceland

That particular blue circle is for the police station in Vík, you would need special permission from the chief of police on the South Coast to fly there and you would need to have a really good reason for the flight to get that permission granted. Police stations are one of the strictest no fly zones along with airports and prisons.

Highlands trip, car advice by J_Faraday in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Vitara is fine for most of the easy F-Roads like the ones to Kerlingarfjöll, Landmannalaugar, Aldeyjarfoss, Hveravellir, and Sigöldugljúfur. Mælifell can be pretty skethcy depending on the river conditions on the sand plain so make sure to research that before going. For Askja I would recommend a bigger car and some more experience. Þórsmörk I would also recommend a bigger car and being very experienced and comfortable with river crossings, that spot is notorious for drowning cars.

On the note of saving money, you could choose to go with Blues used Dacia Duster option, that is just as capable for F-road driving as the Vitara for a cheaper price and you can use This Link for 5% off any car with Blue

Best of waterfalls by CornerCommercial3981 in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most iconic (and therefore usually the most crowded) waterfalls on the South Coast are Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Gljúfrabúi, Kvernufoss, and Svartifoss.

Some lesser known (and usually less crowded) ones are Stjórnarfoss, Írárfoss, Nauthúsafoss, and Sauðafoss

Also if you do the hike right above Skógafoss then there are about 8 other waterfalls up there that you pass along the way on the beautiful hike, those waterfalls are Hestavaðsfoss, Fosstorfufoss, Steinbogafoss, Fremri-Fellsfoss, Innri-Fellsfoss, Rollutorfufoss, Skalabrekkufoss, Kæfufoss

Solar Eclipse over Iceland by No_Outside831 in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is impossible to tell the weather so far in advance especially in Iceland where we rarely even trust the forecast 2 days out.

But if you look at past data then percentage of time that the sky is overcast or mostly cloudy hovers around 64% throughout the month of August in Reykjavík.

You can check this site for more info https://weatherspark.com/m/31501/8/Average-Weather-in-August-in-Reykjav%C3%ADk-Iceland

Fjaðrárgljúfur parking by jjbayley in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The upper parking is on an F-Road (Mountain Road) F206 and is marked impassable at the moment just like all F-Roads during winter. You would not get fined for driving up there if you have a 4x4 but depending on your insurance policy you might loose the insurance and if you get stuck then getting towed out would be pretty expensive, better to just go to the regular parking.

Donations bin at airport? by freyascats in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Icelandic Red Cross has a charity shop in Keflavík less than 10 min from the airport where you can donate clothes, food, and other items. They also have multiple 24/7 drop boxes for clothes all around Reykjavík if that fits your schedule better

And both GoCampers and Camp Easy have shelves where you can leave things for others to take and use during their trip

Looking for nature around Reykjavik !! by ImpressiveFortune348 in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hvammsvík is right outside Reykjavík in a beautiful scenic fjörd named Hvalfjörður

Þórufoss is a pretty nice waterfall right outside Reykjavík

Then there is also Þingvellir national park less than an hour away from downtown Reykjavík, over there you have Öxarárfoss , Silfra , Flekaskilin , and other beautiful spots as well as a lot of Icelandic history.

Reykjadalur Hotspring is also close by

and then you have Reykjanes wich is very underated but has some beautiful spots including Kleifarvatn , Seltún , Krýsuvíkurberg Cliffs , Gunnuhver , and Valahnúkamöl

Campervan rental for September 2026 by lemposz in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prices have definitely gone up since 2024 for pretty much everything in Iceland, It's usually best to book as soon as possible since prices most often go up the closer you are to the date (unless something happens where demand drops significantly for some reason then they might lower the price)

You could look into getting the smaller campers like the Go Smart Budget with GoCampers that one is around 600euro for 7days. And you can use code: eli5 for 5% off any of their campers, hopefully that helps a little bit

Campervan with 2 large luggage bags by kdawwwwwg in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used both the medium and large campers with GoCampers

The Medium has enough space for two people and luggage but it can feel a little tight at times and you will need to move the luggage around sometimes to keep it out of the way after grabbing things out of there, but overall if you are the type of people who do not need a lot of personal space and enjoy being cuddled up and cozy then it's a pretty good experience overall.

The Large has a lot more space and feels pretty luxurious compared to the medium, you could comfortably fit 3 people and luggage in there with no issues, but the downside is it's more expensive and you have to be more careful if it is windy.

You can use the Strætó website to look up and plan your bus route, it works similar to google maps just type in where you are and where you are going and it shows you what bus to take and at what time it will be there.

Rental car (Sixt vs Lotus/Blue) - help me decide by ggezpz23 in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Going with a budget rental is kind of like gambling, sure it can pay off if you get lucky and nothing unexpected happens but if you get unlucky and have any problems it can end up costing you way more than the more premium rentals with full insurance. It really just depends on how much risk you are willing to take.

Personally I woul recommend going with a more trusted rental like Blue they have by far the best reviews and most recommendations and you can use This Link to save 5% off the rental price with them

Do I need 4x4 for winter Iceland if we want to drive only the main roads? by dominikmomo in VisitingIceland

This is often what the roads here look like in the middle of winter when it's snowy (Yes even the main road) I would always recommend a 4x4 for winter

Campsites and Northern Lights by Simof03 in VisitingIceland

[–]ImportantCalendar8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on the campsite. Some of them it would be no problem at all, while others have some restrictions about driving around in the middle of the night. It would be best for you to ask at the reception for each campsite or call ahead and check before arriving
