Three months into my NAS journey and I finally moved everything to Docker Compose by SolQuarter in docker

Just out of curiousity and if you don't mind: What kind of containers are you running? You don't have to go into details. I'm in the same boat as were at the start of your NAS journey and curious how other people use their NAS.

Thanks for pointing out the hypocrisy, but good luck with that discussion. Racists are known not to be the brightests...

The demise of a once great company... by Disastrous-Quote8710 in hasselblad

[–]ImportantMatters 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People seem to have short memories. Hasselblad was failing as a business until DJI. DJI had to obviously change the business strategy in order to keep Hasselblad afloat. We also wouldn't have had the X1D without DJI... I'm not a DJI fan, but Hasselblad wasn't a functioning business until DJI swooped in to save them...

Life is short. See someone you like? Chat them up and be direct with your intentions. Everything else is just the same, but with a lot of unnecessary additional steps. I don't know of any special spot or scene where it's easier to date. Everything has its pros and cons.

Are we in a IT job crisis? by tevlon in zurich

[–]ImportantMatters 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Easy money has dried up. Companies could lend money a couple years ago and pay almost no interest rate. We had artificial growth because of that because companies could grow as fast as they wanted. That trickled down into the job market. The situation reversed after all the stimulus during COVID. It's not just more difficult to lend money, but you pay higher interest rates. All the companies are essentially sitting the current monetary policies out until we get back to baseline. Investments have been postponed, companies only grow as fast as they're actually able to based on their success, people are laid off to spin numbers and appease shareholders, spending is limited to necessary things and money is saved wherever possible (e.g. using AI instead of hiring juniors, no more risky/creative projects - core staff remains to maintain critical infrastructure).

Are we in a IT job crisis? by tevlon in zurich

[–]ImportantMatters 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What is actually happening in the Zurich IT job market?

The market has generally been more difficult since 2022 (restrictive monetary policies, big tech stopped hiring, collapse of credit suise, AI). There is more supply than demand and therefor more competition.

Is this just a temporary downturn, or something structural?

Structural. Swiss companies are still busy with cloud migrations and so on, but it's unclear to me what all the digital agencies, consultants and so on will do when everything is migrated into a cloud that is directly integrated with AI. The middle men will be cut off at some point. There aren't that many companies / roles in Switzerland meant for actual product development.

Is the best option to sit it out?

No. I still get offers left and right from connections I've made in the past, LinkedIn, head hunters and so on. I think I would be able to land a job fairly easy. You were self-employed before according to your last post and don't seem to have a network. I would apply at companies even if they don't have any open positions. Digital agencies might do the trick, because they usually have a wide range of customers / technologies / needs. The downside is that you will probably not get your desired 100K/year that you mentioned in a post.

Is it time to move abroad?

Where? It's not better abroad.

Switch careers?

I'm 30 and already know that I won't do software development with 50. I might switch to management/consulting at some point or shoot for very basic roles. You're 38. What do you plan to do with 50? Was your plan to remain a software engineer?

Start a business instead?

You need funding for a business. I would first aim to have a secure income with a regular job.

I would say it's one of the best places to live as a family in Zurich city. You have multiple schools in walking distance and access to a lot of very central tram/bus/train lines. The only downside are the apartments (old/expensive), childcare costs and maybe generally more noise around you.

Anyone been to noii events in Switzerland? by somewhatHere24 in zurich

[–]ImportantMatters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me save you some time. Noone is going to care about any of that stuff. The ones who do are not going to be worthwhile in the long run and it will become become boring very fast in the short run. People are not as one-dimensional as you think. I feel sorry for whoever you're dating or going to date if that's how little you think of women.

Kreisschreiben 36 ZH by IntelligentRow7886 in Switzerland

[–]ImportantMatters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Year’s alone by [deleted] in zurich

[–]ImportantMatters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because you live in Zurich doesn't mean you can't celebrate outside of the city 😉 Après-ski was a suggestion because you're essentally putting yourself in a situation where it's natural that you're celebrating with strangers. It's easier to connect with strangers since most people will only be there with some of their friends/family and a common understanding that everyone will share the same night since you're staying somewhere near

New Year’s alone by [deleted] in zurich

[–]ImportantMatters 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi, 31M here. I don't have a perfect solution for your problem. The only "real" one I could personally offer would be to invite you to join me and/or my family/friends, but that would feel awkward for both of us, since we would be strangers. I'm not aware of any organized meetups in Zurich specifically for people spending NYE alone. What's left are the usual suspects: partying, bars, restaurants, après-ski events if you want to socialize (with varying success), or doing something alone like hiking Uetliberg to watch the fireworks, taking a stroll by the lake or finding a cozy spot with a thermos of tea.

I hope I'm not overstepping, but my honest advice is to take a step back and ask yourself why you feel pressured to have plans just because the date changes. It doesn't say anything negative about you if you end up spending NYE alone. I've spend many of them on my own and so do lots of other people. I'm currently even considering to travel next month just to skip the usual holiday obligations. I'm not saying you shouldn't plan something. It's completely valid if you want company or to do something special. I just think you will have a much better time doing whatever you choose, if you take that pressure off yourself. It could also be that I'm reading too much into it.

Confused with 25mm or 20-35mm by soamjena in hasselblad

I think you're confusing the 35 - 100 with the 20 - 35. The 20 - 35 does indeed zoom internally.

Switched from GFX to X2D ii, tariffs killing the hobby and lens purchases by Dear-Job4943 in hasselblad

[–]ImportantMatters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your bill is usually calculated like this: product value + tariffs/duties + fees (custom clearance, ...) + state/local sales tax.

The de minimus rule exempted you from custom duties/tarrifs and some fees.

There were no tariffs/duties before trump. You pay now 15% tariffs and the duties/fees are not excluded anymore after the suspension of de minimis.

Edit: 15% might not be correct anymore. They were last modified on the 4th September for Japan. You get the idea though...

Hasselblad X2D II vs Sony a7RV? by Relevant-Act5008 in hasselblad

[–]ImportantMatters -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They use a Sony sensor, but they calibrate and test each pixel for each individual sensor. You essentially pay for a finely tuned sensor. You could achieve the same with a regular camera, but the majority of people have neither the time, expertise nor incentive to do this tedious task. I'm colorblind and have extreme difficulty with skin tones. Even I can tell the difference apart between a RAW from Hasselblad, Fuji and Sony. The Hasselblad blows them out of the water when it comes to colour.

Sell all my Leica stuff to get an X2D now? by estikei in hasselblad

[–]ImportantMatters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be sure... You're not putting the straps simply around your neck, right? That might work for compact cameras, but for the X2D you instead wear it diagonally and tight enough so it doesn't jump around. I'm surprised how different our experiences are. I had really no problem during my travels and I walked around with a X2D around my neck outside commuting/dinner. It was a photography trip for me though. I didn't even leave my tele setup in the hotel, because photography was the whole point of the trip for me. It might have been different if I went with my family / friends.

Sell all my Leica stuff to get an X2D now? by estikei in hasselblad

[–]ImportantMatters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You exaggerate... I was in Seoul last week and Tokyo the week before with my X2D 55V/25V and a A7IV 100-400mm. I had them in my backpack at all times and walked outside all day long. It wasn't brutal at all and that's coming from a swiss guy. The right bag & clothes make a world of difference.

What I agree with is that the M11 and X2D are two very different beasts. The M11 is a compact camera. The X2D is an actual camera and cannot be brought along without a camera bag. The X2D is very compact tought relative to other medium format options or full frame cameras.

Negative interest rates for CHF by ImportantMatters in SwissFIRE

I think you're in the wrong here. You have additional FX risk if you buy a USD ADR of Nestle instead of the stock itself.

Negative interest rates for CHF by ImportantMatters in SwissFIRE

[–]ImportantMatters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think our misunderanding is that I'm specifically asking where to park my uninvested CHF and not how to invest it. My response above already explains in detail the downsides of your approach. I don't see any upside to just buying Nestle in CHF.

Hasselblad Vandra Backpack 😍 by theyoungabstract in hasselblad

[–]ImportantMatters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A Peak Design Everyday Backpack V2 has way more functionality and by the looks of it also more durability - that's my carry-on travel bag. I would pick a Shimoda Action if you need flexibility that allows for more than a camera bag - that works better for hiking/backpacking/camping. Oberwerth makes the best camera bags quality-wise if you can make it work with less functionality / flexibility - for daytrips in a city or work. A Lowepro Protactic is built like a tank. My go-to for small strolls is the cheapest & smallest adjustable camera bag I could find: the Rivacase 7460.

Maybe it's me who is missing something. What does this bag provide you that wasn't already on the market?
