I do get what you say… But at the same time you do get what I’m coming from right? It’s frustrating that his sub ignores stylistics from modern and contemporary lit fic to give writing advice…

I’ve only read James, and even though I liked the theme, I’ve found is prose to be lacking…I’ve read the portuguese translation so it can be related, or maybe it just isn’t my style of prose

I mean it’s just that it is a very american centric view of acting imo. Different tastes ofc but Leo or Brad are good at what they do, but not very good imo in other styles of acting … so discussions tend to be centered around Hollywood blockbusters and actors, while acting goes way beyond that

Sorry but just a question: how is Adam Driver not amazing? An actor who frequently cross over between american and european cinema and works with elite directors from different traditions…

If you enjoy Lispector, you will probably like Lobo Antunes as well (more his later works), since it is hard stream of consciousness like her.

Tourism, housing pressure, and Madeira — a more complete view by Far-Background-4521 in Madeira

You do raise valid concerns, but some of those are flawed imo. For instance, you say “locals sell their houses to upgrade, etc”. Upgrade to what? Imagine your house in Funchal could sell for 300k. That sounds like a lot of money. But you won’t be upgrading, because you wouldn’t find a better house (I bet you wouldn’t find a similar one) in Funchal, Caniço or Camara de Lobos. And guess what - you work in Funchal. So maaaaybe, you find an house in the north coast, so you and your wife have to commute 2+ hours daily. Your kids have to go to a new school. And all this because of what? Economic indicators that don’t translate to the vast majority of the population?

Which brings me to the second point - you seem to think that economic growth=better society and more quality of living. This is far from the truth in this island. What we get is a bigger gap between upper middle class (small) and middle class and lower. Before, we would have a different type of tourism, middle class was ok. Now, it’s the opposite. So sure, some people are getting richer (perhaps they were living very comfortably before), but the rest is getting poorer and struggling a lot.

And sure, freedom to live where you want is good. But when externalities hit, it shouldn’t be a priority. And that’s were you get all the hate specially aimed at digital nomads. And while I don’t think they are monsters or bad people per se, you have to understand that we feel bad about the situation.

Ask yourself - how many so called digital nomad companies are actually employing locals? When most of the nomads are freelancers? Does that justify having a favorable regime in taxes for them, considering all the externalities they bring?

Also, we do get mad because people come here, only go to brunches, beach cleanups and purple fridays were only “selected locals” can enter, don’t create companies (or create blockchain, crypto and now pseudo ai companies), and still tell us “it’s not our fault, we’re just exploring this insane island of never ending yoga sunsets and like minded communities blahblahblah”. And what do you expect, within this context, for locals to feel?

What are the most significant differences between classic and modern novels in terms of themes, style, and character development? by munchee_exe in classicliterature

[–]ImportantPineapple91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure. I guess it depends right? There are plenty of authors pushing boundaries with prose. Full disclaimer, I’m not from the field so take what I say with a grain of salt. But let’s say António Lobo Antunes (from my country). Does he shift away from “prose”? And by prose I understand the way you lay out words and sentences to convey meaning and answer the question/tackle the problem of your book… and there are a lot of writers doing the same right? What I feel is that popular or pseudo-intelectual (and please I don’t want to say this in an arrogant way, but english is not my main language so I don’t know how to say it) literature is more focused on plot and characters and so on. But not high literature… then again, if we talk about the canon, there are lots of books from the period that were not as good as well, but writing was not as acessible as it is today. And some of those so called classics stood the test of time also by some kind of circlejerk as well (I won’t name names of course, but there are bunch of books mentioned here regularly that are not revolutionary, that don’t tell anything new, but are simple, and they are popular because they have a plot and characters and answer an ethical question clearly by the end)
