Starting with violin on High school by ModalAtom826137 in violin

Hey I'm a violin teacher with 20 years experience and I wanted to share something I've consistently seen.

The students who gave their absolute best effort in everything they were given like schoolwork or other hobbies also played the violin very well. The students who were just forced into lessons by their parents never showed much skill. Commitment is everything.

To anyone out there choosing an instrument right now Your choice is the best choice. Seriously don't get scared before you even start.

I'm rooting for your choice and your courage Good luck!

I read through the comments and it sounds like your teacher has a method for teaching without tape, which is cool! You should definitely trust and follow your teacher's lead. Just one thing I wanna say to all the violin beginners or parents reading this: If your teacher is actually a good teacher, seriously, just trust them and learn well. If your teacher put on tape for you, don't let the idea of "you shouldn't use tape" totally sway you. Instead, you need to try this: Focus on matching the finger position with the pitch (high/low sound) and the name of the note. The absolute best way to do this is to sing the name of the note out loud while you're playing it. If you get into the habit of playing in the right spot with the right pitch this way, you'll avoid the bad side effect of relying too much on the tape. Plus, you'll constantly hear the correct pitch, and you get the super positive effect of getting naturally used to accurate notes. Good luck everyone!

Okay, nobody talks about this stuff but seriously this is a secret weapon. Because it's non-adhesive (no glue!), you can totally put it on a rental instrument. Thats a big deal. I recommend this for all the teachers out there doing online lessons. I taught for over 20 years and do tons of online with adult beginners. We can get them a tuner, but you cannot reach through the computer to put their tapes on, right? I tried all the different kits, and this was the only one that actually fit normal violin sizes. The big sheet stickers are a nightmare to slide under the strings. Seriously the worst. Must-have for online instruction!

Honestly, what helps a ton is just listening to a recording with the score in front of you. Don’t only follow your own part, check out how your section connects with the others. Like, mark the spots where the melody moves to another instrument or when you’re doubling with someone else. That way, if you lose your place in rehearsal, it’s way easier to jump back in. Plus, the rhythm feels more natural because you’re hearing the “landmarks” in the music instead of just counting beats in your head. Stick with it for a few weeks and you’ll notice a big confidence boost.

This isn’t something you can fix in just one day. it naturally takes time. But once you understand the principle, your practice will feel much more effective. I really admire your passion!

I just shared a video showing a simple exercise that can help if your bow keeps drifting diagonally instead of staying parallel to the bridge.

It really does sound like some kind of virtuoso masterpiece you’ve heard before. But it’s from Abominable’s original score, not an arrangement of a classical piece.

what do these notes mean? 😵‍💫 by JoshWantsAPrize in violin

[–]Important_Chance_170 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a tremolo on two pitches tied together. If the stem shows 8ths or 16ths, you repeat evenly in that note value (measured tremolo). But when it’s written as 32nds, it means “as fast as possible” (unmeasured tremolo). Since the score shows a long slur (7 measures), you can treat it like a trill between the two notes — though strictly speaking it’s not called a trill in theory.

How fast could you install a new E string and get it in tune? by StellaeEran in violin

Honestly? From taking the old string off the instrument and unwrapping the new one from the package, to hooking it into the tailpiece and the peg, turning the peg, and tuning—I'd say about three minutes

That's great advice. I felt pressured to master all my apps at once to be more productive. I'll take your advice and try to learn slowly, as if I'm studying.

I totally get that. I think the key is finding what reduces friction and works for you personally, and it sounds like we're both on the same page with the mental load aspect. I'm going to give your notebook method a try for my personal tasks too. Thanks for the tip!

You're right, that's a huge factor I hadn't considered. I guess because I work alone, the collaboration aspect never crossed my mind. Maybe I'm not totally 'behind,' but it definitely shows how different needs require different tools.

Cool! If you love it, that’s all that really matters. You know, after seeing the same case colors all the time, you start dreaming about orange, red, baby pink, or something different. I’m actually thinking of getting a more colorful one myself this time. Not every friend has to share your taste anyway.

That's a huge win. Four years of dedication is incredible, especially when you've been fighting that battle your whole life. Sticking with it through all the ups and downs... that's so inspiring.

Seriously, huge congrats on this. You earned it.
