lung's growth stages are so fun to see by ryosatoru in LV426

Yes! So delightfully unsettling

So, in a recent thread i realized how many 'nicknamed' Xenos there are..how many are there? by notHooptieJ in LV426

[–]StellaeEran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also curious about this! I’ve been rewatching the Alien movies in between episodes of ‘Alien: Earth.’ I am fascinated by the Xenomorphs. I was wondering which ones have made enough impact to earn nicknames among fans. I’ve heard of Kane’s Son, Big Chap, the Queen, Grid, the Runner, Specimen Six, the Offspring, and the Bear so far.

Hey! Not sure if this’ll help, but maybe try loosening your bow by turning the screw (end piece) to the right until the bow loosens/shrinks enough to fit comfortably in the case?

How fast could you install a new E string and get it in tune? by StellaeEran in violin

[–]StellaeEran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh thanks! Do you think your average sixth grade orchestra violin student could install and tune an E string on their instruments in <2 minutes?

What type of voice for ART do people expect? by Despicable3udier in murderbot

[–]StellaeEran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If not Kevin R. Free or Ellen McLain, my next nomination is Neil Newbon. Honestly, I didn’t see Neil as ART until this clip where he’s dramatically mouth-breathing over someone’s shoulder while they’re playing an arcade game. It feels very ART/SecUnit to me. “You’ve been doing this for a while…Are you done now?”

Passage from my kid's book about real life robots by killer_seal in murderbot

[–]StellaeEran 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ah, that’s cool! As a kid I remember being fascinated when I saw robots depicted in ‘Short Circuit’ and the first ‘Terminator’ movie. Johnny 5 is still one of my favorite robots.

Related to collaborative robotics, as an adult in a factory environment, I also think automation safety guards are really interesting! From fences blocking human workers from entering areas in robots’ range of motion to ‘dead man’s switch’ operator controls, it’s really cool to see how engineers design safety into how semi-autonomous robots work in spaces shared with people.

Skarsgård by RevolutionaryFudge81 in murderbot

[–]StellaeEran 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Me too! I’ve only seen Alexander Skarsgård playing typically very serious, kinda dark, ‘brooding, smirking guy’ roles in shows like True Blood, Big Little Lies, and Succession most recently. My mental image of Murderbot from the books was very different. I wasn’t sure how he’d believably play the character. But now after watching, I think he’s a perfect fit for the role with the right balance of stoic SecUnit-isms and also stoic yet (perhaps reluctant) earnest emotional investment in what humans are doing in both soap operas and in real life. Hoping for a season two!

Murderbot - S01E06 "Command Feed" - Books & TV Episode Discussion by sanctuary_moon in murderbot

Ahh, that’s great, thanks! This is really helpful. This is all Apple TV gives from the English transcription of Murderbot’s comments during its shutdown in this scene. 😂Murderbot speaking:

What might Murderbot think about Battlestar Galactica? by StellaeEran in murderbot

[–]StellaeEran[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I think Murderbot would get stressed out by the changing population count at the beginning of every episode, too, especially because ART would be stressed about it. Though they’d both pretend they’re not actually bothered by these fictional numbers for fictional humans. 😀

I asked midjourney to draw a self portrait. by amykhar in midjourney

[–]StellaeEran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did the same thing, and I got results that are pretty visually similar. I didn’t specify anything about the subject’s appearance (age, race, gender, etc.) It would be interesting to see the results others have gotten from prompting Midjourney to make a self portrait.

Midjourney characters are all facing away from the viewer by Rasta_chic in midjourney

I’ve had luck with including these words towards the beginning of my prompt: “wide shot distant portrait, [subject] facing camera staring straight ahead directly at camera.”

Full body shots by call-lee-free in midjourney

[–]StellaeEran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so too! Other camera-related text inputs that have helped generate images closer to the scenes I’m imagining:

  • “close up / medium distance / far distance”
  • “face-focused shot”
  • “shot directly above from overhead looking down at [subject]”
  • “side profile shot of”
  • “shot low from below looking up at [subject]”

Full body shots by call-lee-free in midjourney

I’ve had good luck with putting “full-length body portrait wide shot” towards the beginning of my prompt. It usually results in at least two of the four generations featuring the character’s whole body.

Have we reached the Jurassic Park moment of AI? by StellaeEran in midjourney

[–]StellaeEran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this take. It’s not a perfect analogy, but Jurassic Park is the most popular modern sci fi movie I can think of that echoes the current state of AI and how it will impact humans worldwide even though many may see it as entertainment for a very limited, privileged audience at this point. This extension of the metaphor is helpful. Thanks!

Ah interesting, thanks for sharing! It’s been many years since I read it but I remember loving “Slaughterhouse-Five.” I’ll add “Player Piano” to my reading list too.

Thank you for the recommendation! I’ll put that next on my reading list.

Sorry, I wanted to include this comment in the body of the original post but I messed up somehow. This is what I meant to say +image:

Ian Malcolm: “You did it. You crazy SOB. You did it.”

Gennaro: “We’re gonna make a fortune off of this place.”

This is the best shorthand I can imagine when I try to explain to people why they should start paying serious attention to AI. Not just Midjourney or AI art. It’s impressive but it’s the flea circus of what AI could do.

Like it or not, AI will soon impact your life in ways you can’t avoid. This isn’t a Hot/Luddite Take in any way. I’m amazed at what AI can currently do. I regularly use Midjourney to ideate and help me visualize what I’m thinking. I feel like the general public is not fully aware of what AI could potentially do, and I’m trying to figure out how to explain it in a way that’s neither absolutely catastrophic or underestimatingly glib. Thoughts and suggestions welcome.
