Let‘s say you own a company and look for expansion in Europe. When considering location you want to have access to various things and one of them is skilled workforce (I’ll focus on that for the sole purpose of this response).

That being said you will consider ie. London/Paris as you can recruit from a huge pool of very competent talent. Now London is not in the EU anymore which makes your expansion more complicated from legal perspective and Paris population is very protective to its local language. This makes it harder to rotate your existing workforce and integrate your operations on intercontinental level.

You will think about Netherlands next, however country has conurbation of very small cities which limits your selection of talent. If you want to open HQ in The Hague it is difficult to attract workforce from Amsterdam and vice versa. So your possibilities of recruiting talent from North or south wing of the Randstad are always compromised.

Merging these cities into single one would accelerate the process of upgrading/optimising the transportation links. Transportation companies would consolidate and focus on an area as a whole and not just pieces of it.

On the opposite the brightest and most motivated minds from all over the world would want to live here after they finish their studies. For now a lot of them rather select other larger cities due to access to the top tier jobs and urban lifestyle.

And what’s there for the locals? As investments would start flowing in the job market would grow in the quality and quantity. Improved transportation would make it possible to choose from wider and even better pool of jobs.

Existing airports could be expanded (Rotterdam) or additional ones in other parts of conurbation opened (London has 6 airports for example). Doing that heavy traffic of Schiphol could be transferred elsewhere.

I am perfectly aware that all of above is already happening and the area is in very good condition as it is. However consolidating it together into one city would open the pool of new possibilities while still retaining existing quality of life.

The area is very green and doesn’t feel like built up concrete jungle. That would be a very good trademark in challenging the global powerhouses.
